Lions Diplomacy? Andy Farrell clearly doesn't give a rashers and goes Full Irish
@Source: irishmirror.ie
Just why Andy Farrell doesn't ring rent-a-row on weekends and every other Thursday is one of the mysteries of man.Because the 2025 Lions trip is set to become one of the most acrimonious tours ever on the back of the Ireland coach doing exactly what he wanted, ignoring the real-politik of picking a 'combined' squad.Farrell, pushing diplomatic sensibilities aside, didn't give a rashers and went full Irish.And on top of having four Irish among the six assistant coaches - Easterby, Fogarty, Sexton, Goodman - he also appointed the Irish video analyst and his own Irish PR dude.Paul O'Connell, who would have neatly made the eighth sat at any given dinner table, says he ruled himself out.Farrell followed this by selecting a record 15 Irish players to travel, 12 of whom play for Leinster who have yet to win a trophy in the current Lions cycle.Opening up a question as to whether Leinster Defence Coach Jacques Nienbaber, as he coaches such a specific system, is the most needed 'extra'.Social media flak will start slowly and gather momentum over the weekend, the UK Sunday papers will be thundering.After which there will be endless former internationals, pundits and analysts queuing up for some Farrell/Ireland bashing.It could have been noisier too; 15 is a number that looks like it could have been 16 but for the late withdrawal of Caelan Doris...Or 17, as it looks suspiciously like Sam Prendergast was in the tour party up to last Saturday night and that Northampton game.How so? Well, there is very little explanation of just how 32 year-old England back Elliot Daly got into the mix.The 32 year-old has played four times for England this season, as a sub against France and Scotland, standing in at full-back for Marcus Smith against Italy and left-wing against Wales.Hugo Keenan and Blair Kinghorn are two of the best full-backs to have ever travelled with a Lions team and Marcus Smith is in the squad. Duhan van der Merwe, James Lowe and Alex Hansen are specialist left-wingers and also in the squad. Daly has never started a senior rugby game, international or club, on the right wing...So here's how: Prendergast is jettisoned late on Saturday night, Marcus Smith is redesignated from back-three to an out-half with wild outsider Daly - who last week/month/year nobody saw making the squad, gets drafted.Ireland, if needed, can get 14 players in their 'correct' positions onto the pitch for the first game against Argentina in Dublin (June 20th) and if Doris is back, Leinster have won the URC and Prendergast is added in the aftermath, put out XV for the the First Test in Brisbane (July 19th).Sure didn't Ireland, who beat Argentina in November, start Keenan; Hansen, Ringrose, Henshaw (Aki was injured), Lowe; Crowley (Prendergast was sub), Gibson-Park; Porter, Kelleher (Sheehan was injured), Bealham (Furlong was injured), McCarthy, Ryan, Beirne, van der Flier and Doris. Conan was injured.And then, beating Australia two weeks later, start Keenan; Hansen, Aki, Henshaw (Ringrose was a sub), Lowe; Prendergast, Gibson-Park; Porter, Kelleher (Sheehan was injured), Bealham (Furlong was injured), McCarthy, Ryan, Beirne, van der Flier and Doris. Conan was injured.Hang onto your hats folks, this is going to be a bumpy ride! Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email.
