LIV Golf Making a Statement at 2025 Masters Tournament
@Source: newsweek.com
A lot has been made of players from LIV Golf being invited to play Augusta National Golf Club, along with the rest of the majors. Earlier this year, both the USGA and R&A, two of golf's governing bodies, created a direct pathway for LIV golfers into their respective tournaments.However, Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley announced earlier this week they will not be going that route. Nevertheless, there are 12 members in the field this week, and they came to play.36 holes into the tournament, seven of them remain in play, and several have a good chance to make a big splash on Sunday.Let's take a look at them:LIV Golfers at the 89th Masters TournamentBryson DeChambeau -7 (solo 2nd)Bryson DeChambeau leads the LIV pack, finishing the first two rounds in second place at 7-under, one stroke behind leader Justin Rose.DeChambeau had a solid round on Thursday with seven birdies and four bogeys (3-under) and an even better round on Friday with five birdies and one bogey (4-under).Tyrrell Hatton -5 (T5)Tyrrell Hatton is another well-positioned player on the leaderboard, currently tied for fifth place at -5. His performance included four birdies and one bogey on Thursday (3-under) and six birdies and four bogeys on Friday (2-under).Patrick Reed -3 (T12)Just outside the top 10 (T12) is Patrick Reed, who had two solid rounds and some flashes of brilliance. On day one he carded three birdies and two bogeys (1-under), while on day two he spectacularly eagled the par-5 second hole and then carded three birdies and three bogeys (2-under).If his putter can cooperate, or get on a plane and show up at Augusta as Reed said Thursday, he could earn his second Green Jacket.Bubba Watson -1 (T22)Bubba Watson made his first Masters cut since 2022, and his current leaderboard position (T22) is his best since 2019, when he finished T12. He is 1-under thanks to rounds of 71 and 72.He'll likely need to make use of 'Moving Day' at Augusta National if he has any designs on another Masters title.Three tied for 40th +2Three shots behind are Charl Schwartzel, Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann, who are tied for 40th at the bottom of the top 50 players who made the cut.The South African shot a 74 in the first round and improved just enough on Friday to make the cut (72). Schwartzel missed the cut a year ago and finished tied for 50th in 2023.The 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm bounced back from a poor first round to shoot under par in the second. On Thursday, the Spaniard carded two birdies and five bogeys (3-over), while on Friday he kept his mistakes to a minimum and carded a bogey-free birdie (1-under).Finally, Niemann had the opposite experience. After his first round 72, he carded a 74 on Friday to make the cut on the number. His second round card included a double bogey on the 15th hole, which played a large part in his almost missing the weekend.Some Surprises Missing the CutFive LIV Golf players missed the cut at Augusta National, with some surprises among them. Brooks Koepka was one of them, as he was expected to be able to go further up the leaderboard.In fact, Koepka was making the cut by one shot when he reached the 36th hole, but he completely lost it there. After sending his tee shot into the trees and reaching the green in five, he 3-putted inside 10 feet, 5 feet and 2 feet to make an 8 on the hole and finish at 5-over for the event.Sergio Garcia was also a surprise missing the cut, considering the good results he has had in the current LIV Golf season.The other three LIV Golf players to miss the cut were Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith.More Golf: Akshay Bhatia Avoids Rory McIlroy at Masters, Stays 'In Own Lane
