At least three people are in a 'very serious condition' following a sudden blast at a tourist bar in Spain earlier today (June 19). A total of 15 people were injured when an explosion happened at Casa Javi Bar in Lo Pagán, San Pedro del Pinatar. Fire engines and ambulances rushed out to the scene at 12.23pm local time. The bar suffered "significant material damage" with its windows and front door blown off. The town's mayor, Pedro Javier Sánchez, spoke out after the terrifying incident, saying: "We in the town are dismayed. We hope they recover; that's our only wish." It has since emerged that it was a gas explosion as authorities are now investigating how exactly it happened. The bar was closed at the time but is located on a street that has a flea market - it is unclear if the market was open at the time of the blast. Images from the scene, however, show damaged materials that appear to be similar to food stalls commonly seen at such markets. While police officers can also be seen speaking to stallholders amid the wreckage. Authorities from the City Council and Civil Protection Service were dispatched to Lo Pagán early this afternoon alongside firefighters from the Murcia Region Fire and Rescue Consortium and ambulances and paramedics from 016. Of the three seriously injured, one person has been transferred to ICU at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia. Another has been admitted to the burns unit at the same hospital. The third person with severe injuries was rushed to the Los Arcos del Mar Menor Hospital in San Javier. Three other less seriously injured people have been either admitted to Los Arcos in San Javier or the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena. The remaining seven people with minor injuries are being treated at a local health centre. The Lo Pagán costal region in Spain's south east is often referred to as the 'healthiest place in the world' due to the good microclimate. There are also mud baths with alleged healing qualities due to the presence of calcium, salt, iodine and magnesium. While traditionally a quieter part of Spain in terms of tourist footfall than its northeastern counterparts, Murcia has seen a spike in international visitors over the first few months of 2025. Over 320,000 foreign holidaymakers visited the region between January and April, according to Euro Weekly News, marking almost a 20% increase from the same period last year.
