Both Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles will host sailing events for the 2028 Summer Olympics, according to a recent announcement from LA28 organizers.
LA28 announced the final sailing venue plan on Monday, June 30.
In Long Beach, Belmont Shore will host four board events — men’s and women’s windsurfing, and men’s and women’s kitesurfing.
The city is also slated to host several other Olympic and Paralympic events — the most of any other venue city outside Los Angeles itself — including beach volleyball, handball, shooting, rowing, canoe sprint and more.
The Port of Los Angeles, meanwhile, will host six boating events, including men’s and women’s dinghy, men’s and women’s skiff, mixed dinghy and mixed multihull.
Both locations have a history of hosting Olympic sports. In 1932, the port hosted sailing at its Outer Habor, according to LA28, and during the 1984 games, Long Beach also hosted sailing.
“Long Beach is the premier location for windsurfing and kite — two outstanding sailing events that will captivate spectators,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said. “We hosted sailing competitions during the 1984 Olympic Games, and we cannot wait to continue our legacy and show our beautiful coastline to the world once again in 2028.”
Both venues offer ideal conditions for both athletes and spectators, LA28 said, with reliable weather and ocean conditions.
The sailing events at both locations will be staged consecutively, LA28 said, to ensure viewers can watch both. Long Beach’s board events will be up first, followed by boat racing in the San Pedro harbor after. The two venues are about 10 miles apart.
“I’m thrilled that the LA Harbor and San Pedro will host sailing competitions during the 2028 Olympic Games,” said Los Angeles Councilmember Tim McOsker, who represents the Harbor Area. “It’s important that these Games are a success, not just for our city, but for the world.”
LA28 will release additional details about the competition schedule for Olympic sports this summer.
