'Looks like the circus has arrived': Manchester United fans react to plans for Old Trafford rebuild
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
A circus tent, an acne spot and a poncho are just some of the things that MEN readers say sprung to mind while looking at proposals for the new Manchester United stadium. Concept images and videos of the club's new 100,000-seater stadium have been released as part of an ambitious five-year plan to regenerate the area around Old Trafford . The new stadium was designed by architect Lord Norman Foster and the pictures and scaled models were unveiled at Foster + Partners' headquarters in London today (March 11). Speaking about the stadium, Foster has said he hopes it will bring fans 'closer than ever' to the pitch and cultivate a 'huge roar' acoustically'. The stadium is projected to have three 200m high masts - which Lord Foster dubs 'the Trident' - which would be visible from 40km. As well as the trident, a vast umbrella that has the technology to harvest solar energy and rainwater will be cast over the stadium, also providing shelter for a new public plaza that is projected to be twice the size of London's Trafalgar Square. The news has brought a mixed reaction, as expected with United's massive fanbase. Readers of the MEN have rushed into the comments to give their opinions on the distinctive design that is expected to replace the 115-year-old Old Trafford . Fans have already picked on a number of striking details about the design, however, the two that are driving the most conversation are the three masts made to look like a trident, inspired by the club's logo, and the net-like umbrella that is draped over the stadium. One MEN commenter, Upper90 put it bluntly with their assessment and said: "Looks like a circus tent." GrumpyExMatelot carried on with the theme and wrote: "Looks like the circus has arrived." While reader JasperJH said: "Is that a giant condom over the top of it?" Optimistic user, cartmenez wrote: "On the positive side, it might finally keep the water off punters?" 192Manchester alluded to the bright red colour scheme of the stadium and white umbrella when he said: "Looks like a giant acne spot." and factsman1, who was not a fan, described the stadium as "hideous". Commenter, sav7 disagreed by saying: "Love it." However, was quick to remind people of the importance of on-field performance with the Manchester United men's team currently languishing at the bottom half of the Premier League , they wrote: "But priority is to get our boys back to winning ways." While many may be looking forward to a brand new Mancunian monument being built, MEN reader, fortunehunter was already thinking about the impact it would have on the surrounding areas and said: "It's not about football anymore. It's who's got the best looking stadium. "Road traffic problems will still persist. Players will still under perform. Complete waste of money. The fans will get shafted!" Red Devils fan, Manutd75, was optimistic about the plans and said: "Looks like a trident to me, especially lit up at night, but most of you didn't even watch the video. Haters gonna hate. Ain'ters gonna ain't. GGMU." Over in the Facebook comments, Mel KG said the design "Looks like a mosque." While Scott Ferguson likened the umbrella to a poncho and wrote: "Well it's always raining here so why not throw a poncho over it." Images of the new 100,000-seater also depict music concerts being hosted at the stadium as well as other events in the public plaza. Other images shared by the club also show a new linear park, open cinema and market around the site as well as a 'museum of football' within the umbrella of the stadium. Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe confirmed upon the completion of his minority stake last February that his preference was for a new-build to replace the 115-year-old home of United on the same site. The Manchester Evening News previously reported that club figures estimate the cost of a new stadium to be £2billion. United have lost £300m in the past three years and they are in danger of breaching the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.
