Louis Rees-Zammit's huge new salary figure published but he could lose nearly all of it

After weeks of speculation, Louis Rees-Zammit has decided his future and re-signed for the Jacksonville Jaguars. It can now be revealed how much he will earn.
The former Wales wing turned NFL hopeful was made a free agent last month after his deal with the Jaguars expired and had reportedly been weighing up his options of where to go next. But following a fresh contract offer from the Jags, he has opted to extend his stay and has been signed to the franchise's 90-man active roster ahead of pre-season.
Rees-Zammit moved to Jacksonville in August after leaving the Kansas City Chiefs and was given a place on the Jaguars' practice squad as a wide receiver. While he impressed coaches with his athletic ability and eagerness to learn, however, he was not elevated to the active roster during the season, with the Jaguars finishing second to bottom of the AFC South.
The pre-season roster that the Welshman is now part of will consist of up to 90 players, which will then be cut to 53 before the new NFL campaign begins. Rees-Zammit already knows what it's like not to survive that cut, having been waived by the Chiefs ahead of last season.
Whatever happens on cut day this year, it is set to have a huge impact on the 23-year-old, not only in terms of his NFL ambitions but also the amount of money he will bank.
After signing his new Jaguars deal, Rees-Zammit's base salary has been listed on Over The Cap as $840,000 (£666,000). This amount is the minimum rookie salary, with the Welshman still classified as a rookie due to not playing last season. It is, however, roughly twice as much as he earned as a rugby player.
If he can survive the cut and remain on the Jaguars' active roster for the campaign, he will be paid that amount over the course of the 18-week regular season. However, he won't see a penny of that $840,000 unless he is active for at least a part of the season.
While the ins and outs of Rees-Zammit's contract have not been publicised - with any signing bonus not yet confirmed - there appears to be no guaranteed money included in the deal. That means the amount he receives will drastically drop if he doesn't make it on to the 53-man roster.
In the event that the former Gloucester star lands on the practice squad again, he will receive around $13,000 a week for as long as he remains there. If he gets elevated to the active roster over the course of the season, however, he would likely go back to being on the minimum rookie salary.
But if disaster strikes and he is cut altogether, he will not receive any money from that point on. During the six-week pre-season training camp he will undertake, he will receive a $2,000-a-week per diem, rather than any official salary, meaning that - in the event he is cut - he would leave the Jaguars having been paid around $12,000 since the start of pre-season.
Ahead of signing his new contract this week, Rees-Zammit attended the Super Bowl and told ITV that night: "This past year has been crazy. A crazy experience. Mentally and physically it's been tough, but it's a journey I've always wanted to be on so I'm loving it."
