'Low standard' - Post-season tour organiser aims dig at Manchester United after Honk Kong visit
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
The organiser of Manchester United's friendly in Hong Kong has shared his thoughts on the exhibition match. United won 2-0 against Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season and a 32-man squad immediately flew to Asia afterwards to face ASEAN All-Stars and Hong Kong. The post-season friendlies in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong raised around £10million for United, but they were controversial after being arranged at the end of a long campaign. Ruben Amorim still named strong starting teams, although the Hong Kong Stadium did not sell out for the second match. Kam Wai Ming, CEO of Proevents Management, arranged the match in Hong Kong and spoke to local press , revealing he'd been asked why he organised a game with a team of "such low standard." “When we started organising this event, we faced many criticism," he said. " Manchester United ? Why invite a team of such low standard? But when we began organising last year, no one could predict their results this year. No one wanted this to happen.” When asked about 33,000 tickets being sold, he responded: “Of course, we wanted all 40,000 seats to be sold. This team of Man Utd… maybe it’s a little worse [than usual], because their performance is bad this season, I think that’s the reason for us falling a few thousand seats short.” When asked if he was happy overall with the event, he said: “I think it is okay.” Kam Wai Ming continued: “No athlete ever wants to lose on the field. But football is a sport played by teams of 11 players, when bad things happen, when you lose, the situation can cascade.” “The match [Man Utd] played in Hong Kong, I think they performed better than they did [in Malaysia], the players even run faster than they did in Malaysia.” United will finally give their players the chance for a break before the beginning of pre-season. The £62.5million signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves was announced on Sunday afternoon, meaning the forward will report for pre-season at Carrington at the earliest possible date. United will play pre-season games in Sweden, the USA and in England this summer. --- Here at The Manchester Evening News, we are dedicated to bringing you the best Manchester United coverage and analysis.
