LTA: Only 17 speed guns and 14 static cameras in Fiji

Fiji only has 17 speed guns and 14 static cameras available for its road operations.

The speed guns cater for the entire country.

However, the cameras can only be used in areas with fast internet connectivity.

According to Land Transport Authority (LTA) acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa said the 14 cameras were rotated monthly around Viti Levu.

During an interview with The Fiji Times online platform The Lens @177, Mr Rokosawa said they could not have cameras along the Serua-Coral Coast and Rakiraki-Korovou corridors.

He welcomed the entry of Starlink into Fiji’s internet service area, which he hopes will bring a level playing field in terms of internet coverage.

“Right now, we are working with Vodafone only where there is internet connectivity,” he said.

“The understanding is between the static poles, that’s where it’s going to be addressed by police. But we all are travellers or drivers along the Queen’s highway.

“We know as soon as you pass Coral Coast, the police posts or police speeding checkpoints will be the last of it until you come to Navua. This is just like common knowledge, it’s not because they are not tactical in where they’re located. It’s because of the equipment so it’s quite a big challenge for both LTA and police.”
