PSG head coach Luis Enrique appeared to strike Joao Pedro as Chelsea celebrated winning the Club World Cup.
In shocking scenes immediately after the full-time whistle, both squads clashed as the Blues began to celebrate.
TV cameras showed Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca dragging Gianluigi Donnarumma away while talking frantically in his ear, prompting suggestions that the PSG goalkeeper had been the instigator.
However, further footage showed Enrique approaching Joao Pedro alongside Donnarumma and then slapping the Blues striker's neck which prompted him to go down clutching his face.
Tempers had earlier raised during the game when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair in the 83rd minute. In almost the final minute, Nuno Mendes was shown a yellow card for a lunge on an amost stationary Christopher Nkunku.
PSG’s anger and frustration could not temper the mood among Chelsea players, though, after Cole Palmer produced a scintillating first-half masterclass to guide the Blues to a 3-0 win the final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.
Palmer scored twice and provided an assist for Joao Pedro in a devastating display in the revamped tournament's decider that left the European and French champions shell-shocked before the break.
