Luke McCowan predicts Celtic trophy day tears and reveals special Rod Stewart gift after star turn against Rangers

He's seen plenty of blood and sweat – now it might be the time for tears for Luke McCowan. The Celtic midfielder reckons the next few weeks are going to be emotional after getting over the finishing line in the Premiership and capping a remarkable personal journey from slopping out in a sports centre sauna to mopping up trophies with the champions. McCowan soaked up the celebrations at Tannadice at the weekend as the Hoops sealed four in a row but he admitted it will be Trophy Day at the end of term when it will all hit home just how far he’s come from those part-time days as a kid at Ayr United to his deadline day move from Dundee. McCowan – who was sporting Celtic’s new title winning clobber – said: “When I can sit down and talk about it I will get really emotional about it, that’s when I can get on that level. “Me and my fiance will probably be sitting and greeting on the pitch but it’ll be a nice moment. I might need a hanky in the back pocket! “It’s probably because at 19 and 20, 21, I was working in a sauna, cleaning people’s sweat off a glass cabinet, and now six years later I’m with the champions of Scotland. “Even this time last year you’re battling away in a top six fight. You’re obviously delighted that you’ve got top six with Dundee, that’s a massive occasion for the club. “But then a year later you’re becoming champions of that same league. “It’s scary and you need to actually relish it and not think about it too much. “That’s when I’ll probably get emotional because I would have never got this far thinking about it. I would have never told you that would happen. “You’d have been motivated to get here but as life goes on, it’s always harder with the older you’re getting. “I probably thought maybe I missed my window to get here with the age I was at. “I know 27 doesn’t even seem old but it’s just been amazing, an amazing season.” McCowan might well up when he thinks about the personal achievement. But he insisted the rewards for his hard graft is for all his nearest and dearest. He said: “When I see my family and finance holding the trophy with my medal around their neck, it’ll be a brilliant moment. “I think that’s really what it’s all about, having the people around you. “My fiance especially, who’s been with me since I was 17, knowing the struggles I went through and knowing the mental challenges it takes just to battle away every year. “Then to go to Dundee and move away from home and go through all that, and then you’re coming back to Glasgow or where you’re from and coming back to play with your boyhood club – and also her club as well. It makes it a bit special.” Sunday on Tayside was special too. McCowan joked on the pitch afterwards about being in the stands with the fans when Celts clinched the title at Tannadice under Ange Postecoglou in 2022 but the celebrations were a tad different this time around. He said: “Probably a lot tamer, if I’m honest! When you’re amongst the fans, everybody goes crazy. “But no, it’s one of the ones, you don’t even picture yourself in 2022 being on that pitch, you can’t really think about it. “And then once I was there on the pitch, it was almost when I saw my friends in the stand again, it was like, ‘oh my God’, it was kind of full circle. “And as I said, it was nice to do it on my ex-rivals’ pitch and give them a bit of slack again. “How was it in the dressing room? Can’t you tell? You can hear it in my voice! There was a few sing-songs and whatever, but nothing too crazy, it wasn’t too bad.” It was just another wild day in a whirlwind nine months for the playmaker. There’s just about one thing left of his Hoops bingo card – finally catching up with Sir Rod Stewart. The Celtic superman sent him a bottle of whiskey and a cap after his star turn for Dundee against Rangers last term – which helped send the title to Parkhead. But he’s not managed to meet the superstar in person yet. McCowan said: “Sadly I’ve still not actually. “But when you talk about full circles, it’s a bit mad that because I played well against Rangers he sends me the whisky bottle through and obviously then you come here and you become a part of this club. It’s just a bit crazy thinking back. “I haven’t drank it yet, that’s tucked away, and I’ve got a hat now as well that I’ve worn on the golf course!” There’s every chance they’ll cross paths in the coming weeks and McCowan is out to make sure it happens with a win at Ibrox under his belt. But it’s unlikely Sir Rod will be jumping on board with the suggestions from some that Celtic’s dominance is boring. McCowan said: “It’s people that aren’t winning that can say that. So, it’s as special as it’s ever going to be. Especially if you’ve got a good few boys in there that it’s their first time winning this league. “You can probably see with the celebrations on Saturday after the game. Yes, there’s guys in there like James Forrest who’s won a lot but if you asked him he’d say it’s about the next one, about how special that will feel.” Tune in to Hotline Live every Sunday to Thursday and have your say on the biggest issues in Scottish football and listen to Record Sport's newest podcast, Game On , every Friday for your sporting fix, all in bitesize chunks.
