During his school days, Virat Kohli would often tell his teachers about his dream of becoming a cricketer one day. While he was an above average kid who loved “science and math”, he became an avoid sportsperson with inclination towards cricket. Despite his commitment towards cricket, the “wide eyed” kid managed to do well in his exams. These are among the revelations made by Kohli‘s teachers from his school days in New Delhi and they remember the two-time world cup winning batting maestro fondly whose confidence made them smile. “Ma’am, I will be the next Sachin Tendulkar of Indian team,” Kohli would often tell his teachers from Vishal Bharti Public School. Kohli has often called Tendulkar, international cricket’s most prolific run-getter in history, as his hero. He broke the legendary batter’s record of most ODI centuries during the 2023 World Cup. “He (Tendulkar) is perfection when it comes to batting. But I am never going to be as good as him,” Kohli had said after equaling Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries. “It’s a very emotional moment for me, I know where I come from. I know the days where I have been watched him on TV, and just to get that appreciation from him means a lot to me,” he added. Kohli is counted among the finest batters to have played for India who has holds numerous records across formats. He first came into the limelight after captaining India to U-19 World Cup title win in 2007 before making international debut. Steadily, he turned into a run-machine and has accumulated nearly 27600 runs across formats alongside 82 centuries and 143 half-centuries so far. During his storied India career, Kohli has been part of India’s winning squads of 2011 ODI World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup and Champions Trophies in 2013 and 2025. Currently, he’s busy representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the ongoing IPL where his franchise looks on course to making the playoffs. Having won truckload of trophies at the international level, an IPL title eludes the batting superstar despite being part of the T20 tournament since its inception in 2008.
