Maguire hopeful after Broncos ‘crazy’ injury carnage
@Source: news.com.au
Maguire was left with one giant headache after sustaining a trio of hamstring injuries, including two on the same play in the first half to star halves Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam, before Selwyn Cobbo succumbed two minutes before full time in their 22-2 loss to the Storm. It leaves the Broncos severely undermanned for their Battle for Brisbane blockbuster against Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night. “It was crazy to be honest,” Maguire said of the three hamstrings in one game. “I’ve never experienced that.” Maguire was so shocked by the play that saw halfback Reynolds and five-eighth Mam exit the game late in the first half that he had not even given any thought as to how the Broncos halves combination would look for the clash with Dolphins. “I’ll talk to the players and we’ll go through that,” he said. “I haven’t even thought about that to be honest. “I’m just sort of more concerned about the boys [injuries].” All three players will go in for scans with Mam being the most optimistic that he could get some good news. “‘Ez’ is actually pretty positive, so we’ll see where that takes itself throughout the week,” Maguire said. “Sometimes he can be a bit nervy as well. “Every now and then you get a bit of luck.” While most will write the Broncos off for at lease a top four berth, Maguire is adamant his side has sufficient reinforcements and the strength of character to not let the home-and-away season just fizzle out. “We’ll be right,” he said. “I mean, we’ve got people in the background that can come in. “That’s part of the progression. “We’ve been able to bring a few people in and change around a little bit, so we’ll work through that throughout the week.” Despite going try-less, Maguire said the willingness of his side to fight out the full 80 amid the injury drama was a positive sign. “To the players’ credit, I felt like they handled it really well,” he said. “They were fighting in that game. “Benny [Ben Hunt] went to the halves, Billy [Walters] came on and Kotoni [Staggs] went into the halves as well, we had back rowers in the centres and it just showed what I feel is the character of what the boys have been building for quite some time, the fight that’s in them and playing tough.”
