By: Franklin ASARE-DONKOH President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the 24-Hour Economy policy promised by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 electioneering campaign will officially take effect from July 1, 2025. The 24-Hour Economy Policy was one of the flagship promises made in the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto, for which Mr. Mahama was the flagbearer. Speaking at the opening of the 2025 edition of Ghana Horticulture Expo on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, in Accra, President Mahama described the policy as a “game-changing strategy” aimed at unlocking Ghana’s full production potential. “We are also implementing a game-changing strategy, which is the 24-hour economy, to unlock Ghana’s production potential across all sectors. I am pleased to announce that from July 1, the 24-hour Economy policy will be ready to go into operation,” President Mahama reiterated. He further explained the critical role the policy will play in strengthening the horticulture industry by facilitating the smooth movement of perishable goods such as pineapples, vegetables, and herbs from farms to international markets. According to him, the round-the-clock operations would reduce post-harvest losses and increase export value. “This policy will provide the framework for continued production, processing, and logistics in horticulture. It allows perishable goods like pineapple, vegetables, and herbs to move swiftly from the field to international shelves, thereby minimising losses and maximising value,” the president stated. President Mahama revealed that his government is working with key stakeholders to extend 24-hour operations to Ghana’s two major ports. “I am pleased to inform you that the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Agri-business and the Ministry of Transport are working together with the GRA, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ghana Shippers’ Council, and other stakeholders to soon declare Tema and Takoradi ports as 24-hour ports,” he added.
