Major Overhaul Planned for Marion Jones Complex
The Marion Jones Sporting Complex could soon see a major transformation as part of plans to turn it into a multi-sport hub. Minister of Sports Anthony Mahler said the master plan is still in progress but includes facilities such as a new softball field, tennis courts, rock climbing and pickleball.
“We have some experts that have come in and look at it. They believe a synthetic pitch would be better out here rather than natural grass, and the natural grass will remain at MCC,” Mahler said.
Pressed on cost and timelines, Mahler replied, “We are working on those things, and you will know when the time is right.” Responding to scepticism from the media, he added, “You want to bet?”
Mahler also revealed ongoing works at Rogers Stadium and the Marylebone Cricket Club Grounds, locally known as the MCC Grounds. “We will do the field over as priority. We are going to break down the old building and put up new facilities. But you know these things take time and money.”
The MCC’s upgrades include new fencing and the demolition of old bleachers. “By the time we are finished, both of them will cost around four hundred,or half a million dollars,” Mahler said.
