Man City face Premier League fixture change as race for Champions League takes twist
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Manchester City's Premier League game with Aston Villa will be rearranged. The clubs were due to meet in a televised clash on Monday, April 28, at the Etihad. But the contest will need a new date following Villa's win in the FA Cup quarter final. Marcus Rashford scored twice and Lucas Digne was also on target as Villa beat Preston North End 3-0 at Deepdale. It means Villa will be in last four action at Wembley that weekend. City could yet join Unai Emery's side in the semi-finals should they beat Bournemouth later today. It remains to be seen when the City vs Villa fixture could be rearranged for. The Blues are out of Europe so have several free midweeks between now and the end of the campaign but Emery's men remain in the Champions League. They play PSG in the quarter finals next month and should Villa progress, they would face a two-legged semi-final in late April and early May. In that scenario the weeks commencing Monday, April 23, (before the original date of the game), May 12 and May 19 would be the only available options. City and Villa are two of a clutch of teams chasing a top four spot in the Premier League and qualification for next season's Champions League. Fifth place is also likely to be enough for one of the extra two spots allocated on co-efficients. Both sides will be seeking FA Cup success this season. Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest booked their progress in Saturday's ties with wins over Fulham and Brighton respectively with Villa now joining them. Seven time winners City have reached the last two FA Cup finals, beating Manchester United in 2023 as part of their Treble before losing to the same opponents last term. Villa haven't won the FA Cup since 1957 while Forest last triumphed in 1897. Palace are yet to win the competition. Nottingham Forest, another side in the race for Champions League football, will also see a fixture rearranged - against Brentford - after their last eight FA Cup win. The rearranged games will add further intrigue to the race for the top four between now and May.
