Man City give Erling Haaland injury update vs Liverpool as Pep Guardiola suffers fresh blow
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Erling Haaland is in contention to face Liverpool this weekend but Pep Guardiola couldn't guarantee his fitness after the striker missed Manchester City's Champions League exit at Real Madrid. Meanwhile, John Stones will miss out and may need surgery. Haaland was still feeling the effects of a knee injury picked up at the end of last week's win over Newcastle, reporting that he was unable to play at the Bernabeu. He watched City crash out of the Champions League from the bench without warming up at any point in his role as a substitute. Guardiola had said he was 'close, but not close enough' to feature, and will now hope for positive news on Haaland ahead of their Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday. City returned home from Madrid on Thursday, with Guardiola speaking to media before Friday's training session. He said: "I don't know yet. Tomorrow will know it. Maybe [he will be fit], but I don't know. We train today, tomorrow he will test. "It is better to have him on the pitch than not have him. We're in the position we're in right now. Everyone is responsible for good and bad things. With Erling we're stronger." Elsewhere, Stones will be out for two to three months after limping off against Madrid moments after Kylian Mbappe's fourth-minute goal with a thigh injury. The defender has only recently returned from his latest setback and now looks set for another spell on the sidelines with Guardiola giving a similar timeframe to Manu Akanji. Guardiola said: "He's injured. It is a difficult one. In the next hours or days we will know if he needs surgery like Manu. It will be for a while."
