Man City legend Sergio Aguero accepts offer to play for old club after early retirement

Sergio Aguero is poised to return to the pitch on Monday - for Independiente's veteran side. The Manchester City icon was forced into retirement back in 2021 just months after signing for Barcelona due to a heart condition. But Aguero, 36, has now accepted an invitation to feature for his boyhood club's senior side when they face Racing in the derby at the Estadio Libertadores de America. The former Premier League golden boot winner was briefly back on the turf during a legends match last year but the cameo ended in injury as the Argentine dislocated his shoulder. Thankfully, the issue was not serious, however, as he later played in The Soccer Tournament, a seven-a-side competition in North Carolina, a few months later in June. Aguero was quick to shoot down speculation suggesting he was eyeing a return to the professional game prior to those two appearances, stating: "It's totally a lie, I'm not going to train with Independiente. Sometimes things are invented. I reiterate that the cardiologist said that I am well, that it is important that I am in good health. But to return to training at the First Division level, I would need to undergo a lot of tests." Instead, he is considering a new venture as a potential club owner as he continues to monitor the development of his 16-year-old son Benjamin, who plays for Independiente's youth team. In the background, the ex-Argentina international remains a keen video-game streamer and has owned Esports team 'KRÜ Esports' since 2020. Speaking exclusively to the Manchester Evening News , Aguero recently opened up on the pain of his unavoidable retirement that came just four games into his time with Barcelona. He reflected when detailing how the move to Barca came about: “A call came where my agent told me Barça asked if I was willing to go there, but economically they couldn't pay what City paid me. "I said ‘well, it doesn't matter to me’. I knew what City paid wouldn't be matched by any big team due to my age, so I said ‘let them put whatever numbers they want and try to sort it out’. That's what I told my agent and things got sorted very quickly. When it was almost agreed, I told Leo and he was happy and well then everything happened as it did. What can you do? I was excited to play with him, but football is like that and things happen that you have to accept.” Aguero, who scored the vital last-gasp goal that won City their first-ever Premier League title in 2012, found the net 323 times for club and country throughout his 18-year professional career.
