Man City suffer huge injury blow before Liverpool after nightmare start vs Real Madrid
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Manchester City's nightmare start at Real Madrid was compounded by an injury for John Stones that makes him a doubt for the Premier League visit of Liverpool this weekend. After learning that Erling Haaland wasn't fit enough to start, and then warming up without him, City's assignment of overturning their first leg defeat in the Champions League was made much more difficult when Kylian Mbappe scored within three minutes. Mbappe latched onto a long ball that Ruben Dias couldn't deal with and lifted the ball over Ederson - who had come for a ball he was never going to get. That goal gave Madrid a two-goal lead on aggregate and City's mission was given another hurdle when John Stones went down moments after the restart under no apparent challenge. Vinicius Jr was chasing Stones as he released the ball but did not appear to make contact and Stones went down immediately calling to the bench. A stretcher was called for but Stones walked off unaided, seemingly in tears as Nathan Ake replaced him within seven minutes. Stones is now a major doubt for Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool along with Haaland as he could be seen shaking his head as he headed straight down the tunnel. Manu Akanji will miss that game, with Rodri and Oscar Bobb also unavailable.
