Man loses four stone in four months after returning to slimming group

A man has lost four stone in four months after returning to Slimming World to improve his health. Jason Rogers, who joined the Newbridge Slimming World group in January 2025, said he was struggling to breathe and felt "mentally drained" before deciding to make a change. He said: "I knew I had to do something about it. "The better you look, the better you feel." Although it wasn’t his first time trying Slimming World, Mr Rogers said this time he joined for himself, not because someone else wanted him to. Mr Rogers said: "The Slimming World class and its members made me feel welcomed, though I didn’t really know anyone. "The class was full of fellow slimmers, all of whom were struggling with their weight and needed the inspiration, encouragement, and support to make the necessary changes." He said he never felt hungry on the plan and found it easy to avoid unhealthy temptations. Mr Rogers says the support of other members has been an inspiration (Image: Supplied) He said: "I now go to the gym twice a week and walk for at least an hour. "I enjoy cooking some of the favourites like chilli and spag bolognese but my go-to is a roast dinner, which fits easily into the Food Optimising plan. "My absolute favourite recipe would be diet cola chicken filled with protein and speed foods… really filling and it satisfies my appetite brilliantly." Even small changes, like swapping post-golf pints for diet coke, made a difference. His first week saw a loss of 11.5 lbs, and in four months he only gained weight twice, once during an event and once on holiday. "I still monitor the impact of the food I eat on my energy levels, so I try and stick to having carbs in the day rather than the evening but I enjoy listening to all the different food recipes that my fellow members share and always stay to group to keep my motivation sky high, plus those who stay to group seem to lose more weight. "As my journey is going so well, I like to try and support others on their journey too." Mr Rogers’ consultant, Debbie Cairns-Pitt, who has lost three stone herself, inspired him with her supportive messages and practical advice. Her Newbridge group has nearly 60 members, including people who have reached their target weight but continue to attend for ongoing support. Mr Rogers said: "At group there was no judgement, no humiliation and no mention of gaining weight… just clear plans about what the next week would look like and how we could change things for the better." Ms Cairns- Pitt launched a second group in Oakdale in January 2024, which already has more than 50 regular members. National statistics show 61 per cent of adults in Wales are overweight, with 25 per cent classified as obese. Mr Rogers attends Debbie’s group every Tuesday at Treowen Village Hall, NP13 3DP, with sessions from 5–6pm and 6.30–7.30pm, with other sessions including on Thursdays at the Oakdale Community Centre. For more information or to join Debbie’s group, either pop along to one of the sessions or give her a call on 07493 704036.
