A man who was on his honeymoon died after being struck by lightning in Florida. On Friday, June 20, 29-year-old Colorado native Jake Rosencranz was at New Smyrna Beach when he was struck by lightning while standing in ankle-deep water, WESH and The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported, citing Volusia County Beach Safety officials. Witness Patrick Eichstaedt told WSVN that the incident, which happened just before 12:30 p.m local time, was "pretty terrifying." A nearby nurse was the first to initiate CPR, while a lifeguard, who was over 300 feet away, was notified about the incident, according to WSVN. Soon after, emergency responders arrived and began performing additional lifesaving measures. Rosencranz was unresponsive when he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, reported Fox affiliate WOFL. He died the next morning, according to WESH and The Daytona Beach News-Journal. In a Facebook post, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood offered his condolences to the victim's wife. "So sorry for the tragic loss of a young man here on a delayed honeymoon with his wife," he wrote. "At 29 years old, he should have had many more anniversaries with her for years to come." "Sending sincere condolences to this young woman on behalf of all of us in Volusia County who were hoping against hope that the diligent efforts of our lifeguards, EMS team and ER staff would bring him back to her," he added. Two additional people were struck by lightning while golfing at the Venetian Bay golf course on Friday, according to WKMG-TV and WSVN. The golfers were evaluated, and neither required transport to the hospital, according to the outlets.
