Man United signed World Cup-winning flop, 369-goal machine and Chelsea star in club record deals

Manchester United's transfer record has been smashed on a number of occasions down the years. While Ruben Amorim is in need of a big rebuild before next season begins, it remains extremely unlikely the club will be breaking it again this summer, though. Instead, United are looking to bring in a striker, a playmaker and a midfielder with Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap the top candidates to fill the first two roles. So many incomings means the overall outlay will need to be spread out across several transfers rather than used on one marquee arrival. It is a far cry from the club's heydays under Sir Alex Ferguson . Back in the summer of 2001, United broke their transfer record twice to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy and then Juan Veron. The first of those deals saw Netherlands international forward Van Nistelrooy finally seal his move to Old Trafford for £19m. The now-Leicester City manager saw his hopes of completing a move to United dashed in 2000 after he suffered a serious knee injury. After fully recovering the transfer was completed a year later than originally planned. Van Nistelrooy is widely-regarded as one of the best finishers United have ever had, and after a career which saw him find the back of the net for FC Den Bosch, Heerenveen, PSV Eindhoven, United, Real Madrid, Hamburger SV and Malaga, Van Nistelrooy hung up his boots with an impressive 369 goals to his name - including 35 for his national team, per Transfermarkt . Rio Ferdinand became the club's record signing a year later at £30million in 2002, a then British-record. Ferdinand's arrival was eclipsed by Dimitar Berbatov's £30.7m arrival from Tottenham in 2008, a record that he still held when Sir Alex left United in 2013. Since United's success under Ferguson, United have paid more money for 17 players, although only a few have broken the club's transfer record. Following David Moyes' arrival in the dugout, though, United decided to prise Juan Mata away from Chelsea for £37.1m. Mata became a fan favourite during his time at Old Trafford, with the classy playmaker winning the League Cup , FA Cup and Europa League with United. The club's most expensive signing to date, however, came in the summer of 2016 when Jose Mourinho brought Paul Pogba back to the club. The then-world record £89m transfer was a statement signing with the 23-year-old returning to Manchester after four years away from the club. Pogba joined Juventus for £1.5m in 2012 after coming through the youth system at Carrington. The World Cup-winning midfielder played 226 times before moving back to Juventus upon the expiry of his contract, and never fully justified his transfer fee at Old Trafford. Antony is now second on the list of United's most expensive signings. The Brazilian arrived from Ajax for £81.3m after impressing in the Netherlands but the move has been a failure. In January, Antony was discarded from Ruben Amorim's squad and loaned out to Real Betis. He has revived his career in Spain and could bring in millions of pounds for United in the summer with a permanent deal.
