Manchester gets late goal to beat Leslie

LESLIE -- Three weeks after a 1-0 loss to Leslie, the Manchester girls soccer team pulled out a 1-0 win in the rematch on Wednesday, even if it took 77 minutes to get the goal. With the win the Flying Dutchmen stay half a game ahead of Columbia Central in the Cascades Conference standings. The Dutchmen, Blackhawks and Golden Eagles all have one league loss with six conference games to play. The game was scoreless until the final few minutes when Manchester junior Abbi Austin scored from 30 yards out. “A good shot and a little bit of luck,” Manchester coach Daniel Tar said. “They worked really hard today. We passed the ball really well today. The girls worked really hard. We had a lot of decent chances, that was one of our better chances, and we were able to sail it over her head. She was pretty good in goal.” The Leslie goalkeeper, pressed into service there due to injuries, was senior Lily Smieska, normally one of the Blackhawks’ better players in the field. She made 11 saves. Leslie had one final chance in the closing seconds, racing end-to-end off a goal kick, but an attempt with three seconds left on the clock was not on frame. “We’ve worked on finishing our chances, and today we had plenty of chances we did not finish,” Leslie coach Mazen Ghazy said. “Yesterday, we worked on finishing, finishing from outside the box, finishing from inside the box, even one-on-ones. We have players that are out and injured, and once they are back we should be able to play back to our style.” It was the first time Leslie had been shutout since a season-opening loss to Western. In the 11 games between, the Blackhawks had averaged 5.7 goals per game. “We have to attack, we have to exploit areas on the field, we have to pass the ball and move the ball around,” Ghazy said. “That’s what we’ve been working on all year. We have five injuries. Today we had to play a different style to play the ball behind their back line, and that’s something we struggle with.” It was Manchester’s fifth shutout win of the season. Manchester controlled possession for much of the first half, getting the first six shots on goal in the game, but the Blackhawks defense turned all of them away. A third-minute run saw Kallie Duffing find Olivia Woods who found Madilyn Bennett, but her shot was turned away. Moments later Leslie’s Marissa Stofer stepped in to stop a run by Woods. Duffing also had a promising run only for Jordan Sebolt to step in and stop it. Later in the half the Blackhawks started to answer with chances of their own. Many of the early forays into Manchester’s end by Leslie were turned away by Dutchmen senior defender Savannah Roe. “She’s got good speed and she’s an experienced senior center back,” Tar said. “She works hard and she’s got quick feet and I don’t think people realize how tough she is. She’s got quick feet and she’s good about poking the ball off the foot. She doesn’t panic and instead of just blasting it to get clear, sometimes she’ll make this little touch to get clear and move the ball back up the field to get control.” But in the final 10 minutes of the half a few Leslie players got past the Manchester back line and got shots off on goal, only to be turned away by Madielynn Bennett. Alexis Pierson, Mia Papendick and Sophia Cowing were all denied in quick succession, and in the 38th minute Pierson made another run up the right side only for her shot to be saved. Leslie did have three corner kicks in the first half, to Manchester’s two, but all were cleared away. Early in the second half Manchester got a pair of quality chances for Woods, but one was turned away by Stofer and the other saved by Smieska. Madielynn Bennett denied a pair of shots from Cowing in the 57th minute, and the Manchester defense closed down a run by Pierson moments later. Austin also had a chance in the 66th minute from nearly the same spot from which she would score a few minutes later, but Smieska made the save on that attempt. CASCADES CONFERENCE STANDINGS
