Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed that his son Liam is named after a former Ireland international player. Liam van Nistelrooy, who used his mother's second name until recently to avoid the spotlight, is a rising star in his own right and on the books at PSV Eindhoven where his father played in his prime before moving to Old Trafford. The 17-year-old striker, who has been with the club's youth academy since the age of 10, has been in impressive form this season, scoring 20 goals in 30 matches for the U17 team Van Nistelrooy senior scored 150 goals in just 219 games for United, as well as becoming at the time their all-time European record goalscorer, but fell out of favour towards the end of his tenure. He is now in charge of Premier League strugglers Leicester City and recently met with former United teammate Gary Neville for an episode of The Overlap. The Dutch ace was asked about his son and the reason behind his name, which Neville described as a 'British' name. Van Nistelrooy explained: "We played with Liam (Miller) at United. He signed from Celtic. I remembered, I liked the name." Miller tragically passed away on 9 February, 2018 after suffering with pancreatic cancer, at the age of 36. Born in Cork, Ireland, Liam represented his country through the age groups before making his senior debut on 31 March, 2004 against Czech Republic in a 2–1 victory at Lansdowne Road. Miller went on to make 21 senior appearances for Ireland, scoring one goal. Liam started his professional career with Celtic in Scotland. He won the SPL in 2004 with The Hoops, before signing with Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. Miller enjoyed stints at Leeds United, Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers in the mid-2000’s before he returned to Scotland to join Hibs in 2009. Miller then swapped Scotland for Australia, playing for Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne before heading back home to Ireland to play for his hometown club Cork City. He finished his career in the United States where he played and coached until November 2017. Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts.
