Manchester United’s National League Cup game at Tamworth was abandoned after midfielder Sekou Kone suffered a serious injury.
United’s U21 side started their National League Cup campaign against non-league side Tamworth at The Lamb Ground on Wednesday night.
But the game was abandoned shortly before half-time after Kone suffered a worrying head injury.
Manchester Evening News reporter Steven Railston, who was at the fixture, said Kone fell to the floor after a collision with a Tamworth opponent.
The highly-rated midfielder initially got back to his feet but was instructed by medical staff to take a seat as he received treatment.
Kone was then stretchered off the pitch while appearing to wear an oxygen mask. He received further treatment in an ambulance inside the stadium before being taken to hospital.
Providing an update on the player, United said in a statement: ‘We can confirm Sekou is conscious, stable and communicating with United’s medical team.

‘He has been taken to hospital, as a precaution, for further checks. Everybody at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.’
Manchester United saw off competition from Premier League rivals Wolves and Crystal Palace to sign Kone last summer.
The teenager has played international football for Mali’s youth levels and has been compared to Manchester City legend Yaya Toure by the African media.
United first-team player Chido Obi started the National League Cup game against Tamworth.
The 17-year-old, who joined from Arsenal last summer, made eight appearances for United’s first-team last season.
It had been suggested that Manchester United could loan Obi out after signing Benjamin Sesko for £74m but the club intend to keep him at Old Trafford this season.
Ruben Amorim’s United first-team begin their 2025-26 Premier League campaign on Sunday against Arsenal.
