Manchester United might regret 'significant' revenue boost ahead of summer transfer window

Manchester United will play post-season friendlies in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong this month. Those controversial friendlies are scheduled to be played just days after the Premier League season concludes, and exactly a week after the Europa League final at the Estadio de San Mames. The Europa League final will be played on May 21 and United will play their final game of the Premier League campaign on May 25. United are then set to play ASEAN All Stars in Kuala Lumpur on May 28 and they will play in Hong Kong two days later, before finally giving the players the chance for a break. It's understood the post-season trip will generate roughly £10million and United CEO Omar Berrada said: “We appreciate the amazing level of support that Manchester United enjoys around the world. "And this summer, we are delighted to deliver a schedule that provides our fans in Asia, Scandinavia and the United States the opportunity to connect with the club and watch the men’s first team play live in local settings. “Importantly, tour fixtures drive significant additional revenue which help make the club stronger, allowing us to keep investing in success on the pitch. "They also create unique opportunities for us to collaborate with our valued commercial partners, and to deepen relationships with our fans in regions such as Asia and the US.” Just three days after the Premier League ended last season, Tottenham and Newcastle played a post-season friendly in Australia and they were criticised for the strain put on their squads. Premier League clubs must comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules, meaning such trips could become the norm, despite growing concerns about an already heavy workload for players. United are willing to fly halfway around the world after a taxing season to bank around £10m, but they might regret arranging the post-season friendlies if they win the Europa League. The winners of the Europa League are given €13m (£10.95m), but more importantly, they are granted entry into the Champions League for next season, which offers significantly better broadcast revenue. In February, United published their financial figures for the final three months of 2024 and those bleak numbers confirmed broadcasting revenue had declined by 42 per cent to £61.6million. That is due to United playing in the Europa League instead of the Champions League this term. Playing in the Champions League would provide a huge financial boost at Old Trafford, meaning the post-season friendlies in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong didn't need to happen. United aren't even in the Europa League final yet and winning the competition certainly can't be assured, but imagine if they do win the Europa League and the players are dragged around the world a week later. The revenue from the post-season friendlies will already have been matched by the prize fund from lifting the Europa League trophy, and Champions League broadcast revenue would be secured. While this scenario hinges on them winning the Europa League, if they don't win the competition then the players will have to fly to the other side of the globe just days after missing out on a trophy that would have salvaged something from an awful season. If this is the case, then it's a trip they could really do without.
