Manchester United must approve £30m transfer to receive huge Christopher Nkunku 'discount'
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Christopher Nkunku is a name that doesn't appear to be going away for Manchester United. After Chelsea paid £52million for him two years ago, the Frenchman is being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge. After scoring 70 goals in 172 appearances for RB Leipzig, Nkunku's spell in England has dwindled. He has managed just 60 games for Chelsea, largely due to injury, with just 18 goals. Falling behind Nicolas Jackson in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge last term resulted in Nkunku seeking a short-term fix for the second half of the season. United turned down the move as they refused to settle for a temporary solution. In hindsight, that was the wrong move. The Manchester Evening News reported that the Reds view the forward as a potential enhancement to their attacking line-up. At 27, Nkunku should be in his peak, and the promise of rediscovering his form from Leipzig is enough to consider a move. On Saturday, news emerged that United had been quoted £35million to sign Nkunku. Chelsea's £78.5m fine by UEFA for breaching spending rules, of which £51m has been suspended, means the Blues are bracing for a major clear-out, having already spent big to bring in Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens this window. £35m is quite steep for a player riddled with injuries and who has hardly covered himself in glory since moving to the Premier League. However, Chelsea's long-standing interest in Alejandro Garnacho could make the deal more straightforward. Garnacho is one of five players that has informed United he wants to leave the club this summer. The winger was a key part of Ruben Amorim's team last season, but his fallout following the Europa League final has resulted in a collapse of the relationship. The Manchester Evening News reported in May that Garnacho was free to leave the club this summer if the right offer was tabled. Unfortunately, no such thing has been forthcoming, but Chelsea have been one of the clubs to show interest. Previously, a figure of around £60m-£70m was believed to be the price set by United to sell Garnacho. A fee of £45m has recently been earmarked as a potential offer they would accept. However, if United want to accelerate their transfer business, a further drop to £30m-£40m could work in their favour. Chelsea are actively seeking to sell the likes of Noni Madueke, Joao Felix and even Nicolas Jackson. Add Nkunku's exit to that list, and Enzo Maresca is, based off the Blues recent track record in the transfer market, expected to want further wide attacking reinforcements. For them, signing Garnacho, 21, for £40m is astute business. He has plenty of untapped potential, he's got a point to prove and he can play on either wing. For United, they simply have to sell him, with neither party wanting to continue together. If Garnacho does go to Chelsea, it could be the perfect green light to sign Nkunku and strengthen United's options in attack. The Nkunku of Chelsea may not be appetising for supporters, but getting him back to his best could transform Amorim's forward line next season.
