Manchester United's next transfer move might be about to change

Having agreed to sign Matheus Cunha on the opening day of this summer's transfer window, Manchester United signalled their intentions.
Just 14 hours after the window had officially opened on June 1, United announced they had reached an agreement with Wolves to sign the Brazilian after triggering his £62.5million release clause. The deal was officially completed 11 days later.
United finished the 2024/25 campaign with a goal difference in the Premier League of -10, highlighting the need to strengthen their attacking options this summer. Cunha has arrived at Old Trafford on the back of scoring 17 goals last term.
Having signed Cunha nice and early, United are now in hot pursuit of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo. After seeing an opening offer worth £55m knocked back earlier this month, the Reds have now tabled a new offer in excess of £60m.
Mbeumo scored 20 Premier League goals last term, meaning only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (29), Alexander Isak of Newcastle United (23) and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland (22) scored more in the division.
Mbeumo has informed confidants he wants to move to Old Trafford this summer, meaning both he and United are keen to get a deal over the line. The Reds would like to have a deal done ahead of pre-season starting on July 7.
With Cunha scoring 17 goals last season and Mbeumo scoring 20, United have certainly prioritised strengthening the right area this summer. Despite ending the 2023/24 campaign with a negative goal difference, four of their five summer signings last year were defensive-minded.
In addition to signing Cunha and hoping to get Mbeumo's signature secured, United also want to sign an out-and-out striker. They had identified Liam Delap as their top target prior to the start of the window, but Chelsea pipped them to his signature, signing him for £30m.
If United can get Mbeumo over the line, they will be two thirds of the way towards fixing their attack. He and Cunha scored 35 Premier League goals between them last term, meaning they scored just nine fewer than United did as a team.
With Cunha primed to occupy the left-sided No.10 spot and Mbeumo potentially the right-sided No.10 spot, it should ease the burden on United's No.9, whoever that proves to be.
But having so far had little joy in their search for a striker, and sales being required to fund the addition of a natural goalscorer, they are looking as though they will have to play a waiting game.
In addition to wanting a striker, a midfielder is also on Ruben Amorim's wish list - and that is where United's focus may have to switch to if they get Mbeumo over the line. They need fresh legs in that department amid concerns about Manuel Ugarte's ability on the ball.
A striker remains a necessity for United this summer, but the addition of a midfielder may have to become the next priority if Mbeumo joins Cunha in Amorim's pool of attackers to increase their output.
