Newsweek has created a map showing the world's most hated countries and the United States comes in second in 2025.The map is based on the World Population Review's research for this year "by combining reports and public opinion surveys on the subject from all around the globe."Why It MattersInternational relations are under intense strain at the moment, amid the multiple ongoing wars around the world and the markets still reeling from Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs. What To KnowThe three most hated countries in the world, according to trends observed by the World Population Review, are China, the United States and Russia. The World Population Review cites multiple reasons for negative public perceptions of China, including its "authoritarian regime," the alleged use of sweatshops, its contribution to pollution, its refusal to grant independence to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau and its treatment of the Uyghur people.Similarly, with Russia, "the Russian government is also known for severely restricting both personal rights and freedoms and democracy as a whole," the World Population Review says.It also cites Moscow's war in Ukraine, describing the country as a "bullish aggressor."As with both of these countries, "a major cause of the animosity directed toward the US is the country's tendency to overstep when trying to influence international events in a way that benefits the U.S.," the World Population Review says."While this country's appearance on the 'most hated' list may surprise many Americans, few Asians or Europeans will bat an eyelash," it added. On top of this, the U.S. often draws ire with its culture wars, the Review says – "Deep and increasingly hostile political division between liberals and conservatives."It also cites "Americans' love of firearms and fast food" and a "perceived sense of entitlement among Americans."After these three countries, North Korea, Israel, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria and India make up the rest of the top 10 most hated countries. What People Are SayingThe World Population Review says: "No matter where they live in the world, most people have specific views on other countries. These views can be influenced by many possible factors, from the actions of a country's government or military to its dominant culture and religion or even the behavior of its tourists. These views can also be positive or negative. Some countries are generally well-liked around the globe, some are simply accepted, and some are actively disliked—even hated."However, exactly which countries are the most loved or hated varies greatly as one travels around the globe. While no definitive, data-based list of the most hated countries in the world exists, by combining reports and public opinion surveys on the subject from all around the globe, certain trends definitely emerge."What Happens NextWhile there are multiple peace talks ongoing – in efforts to bring an end to wars around the world – they are contentious and fragile, often with different parties contradicting each other. With long-term effects of Trump's tariffs are yet to be fully felt, as global stocks continuing to collapse and US resisting other countries' efforts to find consensus on tariffs, the negative attitudes towards America could rise higher still in the coming 12 months.
