England and Lions rugby captain Maro Itoje has shared pictures of his traditional Nigerian wedding to his model wife Mimi. The couple married in May, with Mimi sharing a stunning picture of herself dressed in her wedding dress, surrounded by white flowers, but had saved the celebrations for after the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia. The Lions completed a 2-1 series win over the Wallabies, with Itoje being one of the standout players. The 30-year-old then celebrated in style on Friday at the Devere Grand Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden. The couple were filmed enjoying the occasion surrounded by friends and family, as well as Itoje’s Saracens, England and Lions teammates, who also donned traditional Nigerian outfits. In a post on Instagram, the rugby player wrote: “Uhrobo culture to the world… In case you haven’t realised we had our traditional Nigerian wedding last weekend… A time was had.” Itoje grew up in London and both his parents, Efe and Florence, are Nigerian. He has previously spoken about how when he walked into the family home he was transported to Lagos. Itoje’s father had an African food store in Cricklewood, but his main priority was that his son focused on his studies. One April Fools' Day, Itoje pranked his father by sending an email saying he was not attending university because he wanted to concentrate on rugby. His father did not speak to him for three days. Itoke has previously stressed how he does not want to be known as just a rugby player. He has a BA in politics from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, while he also completed an MBA from Warwick Business School. Itoje has a passion for African art, launching his own gallery in 2023 to help underrepresented artists.
