Maruti Suzuki Slashes e Vitara Production Target Amid Rare Earth Magnet Crunch

India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is scaling back the production of its upcoming e Vitara electric SUV due to an ongoing shortage of rare earth magnets, a critical component in electric vehicles, according to a PTI report citing industry sources. The company, however, intends to compensate for this shortfall in the latter half of the financial year and is still aiming for a total production of 67,000 units in FY25. The production cut is being attributed to China's recent export restrictions on rare earth elements and magnets, which have disrupted global supply chains. Since April 4, the Chinese government has mandated special export licenses for the shipment of seven critical rare earth materials. These include samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, and lutetium, elements vital for electric motors and hybrid propulsion systems. China currently controls more than 90% of global processing capacity for rare earth magnets, which are used extensively across sectors such as automobiles, renewable energy, consumer electronics, and even defence.
