Legendary gymnast Mary Lou Retton, who was nicknamed 'America’s sweetheart', became a national icon after her stunning performance at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. At just 16, she captured the hearts of millions by winning five medals, including gold in the individual all-around competition - making her the first American woman to achieve the feat.
