Charlton police have charged a Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School teacher with indecent assault and harassment, after several students reported inappropriate touching and sexual comments. David Martinson, 61, is charged with indecent assault and battery on a person over 14 years old, three counts of criminal harassment, assault and battery, and accosting or annoying another person, according to court documents and police reports. Martinson pleaded not guilty to all of the charges at an arraignment on May 5. He posted a $5,000 cash bail and will return to court for a pretrial hearing on June 26. According to his LinkedIn, Martinson is a cabinet remodeling teacher at Bay Path. His lawyer, Eric Goldman, said Martinson has taught at Bay Path for 21 years and has had no prior allegations or discipline. He was also the soccer coach, and “all indications are that he is well-liked and respected,” Goldman wrote in an email to Boston.com. School Superintendent Kyle Brenner did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Brenner told the Telegram & Gazette, however, that Martinson was placed on paid leave when the allegations against him came to light and that the school is investigating the matter internally. According to the Charlton police report, the alleged incidents happened between February and March. They included three incidents of unwanted grabbing and touching of the buttocks and lower back of a student without consent, placing his hands around a student’s neck, and numerous inappropriate sexual comments aimed at his female students. One student told police that jokes between her and Martinson became increasingly inappropriate as she got older, and more recently became physical. At one point, Martinson allegedly told her and another student that it was “one of his biggest fantasies” to have them alone in a room together, and as she walked through a doorway to leave, he allegedly grabbed her butt. During another incident, Martinson allegedly walked up behind her and placed his hands around her throat and neck and told her that she seemed like a girl “who would enjoy being choked” and commented on “how little her neck was.” Another time, according to the report, Martinson asked her and her friend when she lost her virginity and kept repeatedly asking her what age, and continued even after she got up to leave. One time when she was on her knees sanding a table, Martinson allegedly came up to her with his crotch near her face, looked down, and called her a “perfect angel,” referring to her performing oral sex. He also told her at one point to wear more clothing that shows her skin more when she bends over, made a comment about his vasectomy, and took her hair tie out, saying he liked her better with her hair down, according to the report. Three other students made similar comments about Martinson. When a student told teachers of the incidents, she was upset that they broke her trust and confronted Martinson, according to the report. She was also upset that the teachers blamed a recent brain injury for the behavior. Teachers told police that students would call Martinson a “creepy old man.” After an investigation by police on May 2, police asked the court to issue a warrant against him.
