Mastermind viewers say specialist subject 'shouldn’t have been allowed'

Mastermind viewers have argued that a contestant's unique specialist subject about a popular UK sitcom 'shouldn’t have been allowed'. The latest episode of the BBC Two quiz-show, which aired on Monday (March 10), saw presenter Clive Myrie asks questions about Miss Marple , Wales' rugby team and the reign of Henry II.. With those taking part allowed to choose what topic they'll be asked about, Gary Austin came on the show to showcase his knowledge of Channel 4 sitcom Friday Night Dinner. Airing from 2011 to 2020, consisting of 37 episodes, the comedy follows the weekly Friday night dinner experience of the Jewish middle-class Goodman family in North London. Starring the Inbetweeners' Simon Bird, Tom Rosenthal, Tasmin Greig and the late Paul Ritter , who passed away in 2021, Friday Night Dinner is one of the most popular comedies of recent years. Retired teacher Gary clearly knew his stuff, picking up 12 points as he moved on to the second round with ease, where he was quizzed on general knowledge trivia. Those watching at home rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter , to call out the speciliast subject, arguing that they also were able to get all of them right. @NorbertEFresno said: "Can we please up the bar for acceptable specialist subjects? #Mastermind." @sunlunpete added: "Ruins #mastermind when someone answers sitcom questions." @PaulUsher wrote: "#Mastermind shouldn’t allow TV programs as specialist subjects! You watched a few episodes of a program? Great. That’s not the as studying world history, science, literature. Moan over." @nickgbayly stated: "Friday Night Dinner is way too narrow a specialist subject for Mastermind. 15 hours of telly. #mastermind." @bluebirdlegend commented: "I have to say the general knowledge questions on #MasterMind are way too easy. Im not looking for University Challenge levels but it’s been dumbed down a lot." @Mackadoodle63 stated: "At the least, they should ask questions about the production. Very rarely are there any questions about the writers, actors, or even when was it first aired. It's often quite marked the relative differences in the first and second round scores." Despite fans not being happy with Gary's specialist subject , Gary scored 22 points from the general knowledge, winning the episode and progressing to the next round. Speaking about his win, Gary said: "Having won, I’m absolutely exhilarated. Completely amazed. I was delighted when Clive said that I’d got all of my specialist subject questions right, and then I thought I had a bit of a cushion against some of the others who might have had better general knowledge because I’m not really a quizzer. ‘I’m not in a team, not in a league, I’m basically what you might call an armchair quizzer. I’m a massive fan of Friday Night Dinner, I had loads and loads of questions that I’d written on Friday Night Dinner and rather than read them on my mobile phone."
