In a landmark announcement that confirms the Australian Open as one of the world’s most prestigious events, Augusta National will extend an invitation to the winner from this year onwards. It’s a move that could open the door to an influx of Masters hopefuls, including LIV stars who have fallen off the world rankings radar since joining the breakaway tour. Instead of offering invitations to winners of some of the weaker PGA Tour events, Masters invites will now be extended to the winners of six national tournaments – the South African Open, Australian Open, Japan Open, Spanish Open, Hong Kong Open and Scottish Open. “The Masters tournament has long recognised the significance of having international representation among its invitees,” chairman Fred Ridley said. “We, along with The R&A, have a shared commitment to the global game and are proud to work together. Today’s announcement strengthens our organisations’ collective vision of rewarding top talent around the world who rise to the top of historic national open championships.” This year’s Australian Open is being played at Royal Melbourne with reigning Masters champion McIlroy the headline act. “We are committed to elevating the status of our national Open, and this announcement is another significant step in that direction,” Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland said. “Winning a place in the Masters field is a great honour for any golfer and combined with the chance to qualify for the Open it will be a special bonus for the Australian Open winner. “With the 2025 Masters champion Rory McIlroy confirmed to play at Royal Melbourne, there is already huge anticipation ahead of the Australian Open in December. This announcement will only fuel greater interest from players, fans and commercial partners. “Winning a place in the Masters field is a great honour for any golfer and combined with the chance to qualify for the Open, it will be a special bonus for the Australian Open winner.” Augusta National invites players inside the top 50 on the official world golf rankings at the end of the calendar year and this is the first major shift in Masters qualification rules for a decade. The Australian Open already offers spots at the British Open to the top-three finishers not already qualified.
