Match-Fixing In Dhaka Premier League? Bizarre Video Pushes BCB To Start Investigation
@Source: news18.com
An investigation has been launched into a potential match-fixing incident in the Dhaka Premier League, where a batter was seen removing his bat from inside the crease to seemingly create an opportunity for the opposition wicketkeeper to stump him out.
Part of Bangladesh’s premier List A competition, Gulshan won the match by just five runs after the controversial stumping of the Shinepukur wicketkeeper, Minhajul Abedin, who had stepped out of the crease and left the ball.
During the run chase, Shinepukur required six runs to win from 43 deliveries with one wicket in hand when Abedin, unbeaten on 8 at the time, having faced 34 balls, charged at Gulshan spinner Naeem Islam and left a wide ball.
Abedin spun around and grounded his bat outside the crease before dragging it further away from safety.
Gulshan wicketkeeper Alif Hasan, not being able to dislodge the bails on his first try, completed the stumping to end the game and seal a win.
Shinepukur was bowled out for 173 in 43 overs, with the five-run loss confirming their relegation to the tournament’s second division.
“This is shocking. I have never seen anything like this before,” commentator Mazhar Uddin Omi said on air.
On Thursday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in a statement that it had taken note of the concerns.
“The BCB Anti-Corruption Unit and the League’s Technical Committee have promptly initiated an investigation into the alleged irregularities associated with the match. The BCB remains committed to ensuring fairness and discipline in all cricketing activities under its jurisdiction,” the statement said.
Shinepukur, battling for survival in the competition with only two points in nine games, required only six runs in seven overs to defeat Gulshan, who were on 11 points, but the bizarre incident led to their fall.
The last round of this season’s Dhaka Premier League ends next week, before the top six sides battle for the title in the super league.
Abedin has scored 583 runs in 21 matches at an average of 30.68 in List A cricket, with three half-centuries to his name. He scored an unbeaten 51 against Agrani Bank Cricket Club last month in the tournament.
