Name: Lexus Bonnie School: Phoenix Class: Sophomore What’s next for you? Travel Who inspires you? My cousin Colleen Austin because he has never left my side. What is your favorite memory from this season? All the times we prayed before matches and tournaments. Name: Riley Butler School: West Genesee Class: Junior What’s next for you? Club soccer Who inspires you? My dad, because he is my biggest fan and the most passionate person I have ever met, whenever I’m on the mat. What is your favorite memory from this season? My team making fun of our coach for his mustache. Name: Marissa Crofoot School: Fulton Class: Senior What’s next for you? Picking a College Who inspires you? The young athletes who will one day be in my place, because, realistically, I look up to them and admire them. I wish that I could have started wrestling as young as them so when I see them, it pushes me to continue to work harder because they are looking up to me as I am looking up to them. What is your favorite memory from this season? Getting to see all of my favorite people at states whom I had not seen for months. What is your favorite quote from your favorite sports movie? “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now, if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!” — Rocky Balboa. Because it explains that you will not get anywhere by allowing your obstacles to prevent you from getting back up to work towards what you want. If you could have any fictional character as your teammate in your sport, who would it be? Hulk, so he could beat me up every day. Name: Gabriella Gonzales School: Phoenix Class: Junior What’s next for you? I am going to start training for club soccer as well as my senior school season. Who inspires you? Amit Elor has inspired me because she worked hard for her goals and won gold at the Olympics. What is your favorite memory from this season? My favorite memory from this season was when coach took us to a super-fancy steak house that no one could afford the night before states. What is your favorite quote from your favorite sports movie? “If you’re not first, you’re last” from “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.” I like this quote because it’s my mindset going into any match or game. If you could have any fictional character as your teammate in your sport, who would it be? I would want Mr. Miyagi on my team because he is a great teacher and fighter, and I really need to work on my defense. Name: Fern Jewett School: General Brown Class: Freshman Name: Zoey Jewett School: General Brown Class: Sophomore Name: Samantha Massey School: Mount Markham Class: Seventh grade What’s next for you? Offseason wrestling and club soccer Who inspires you? Amit Elor. She was just your average wrestler who worked hard to get where she is and her life growing up reminds me a lot of mine. I hope to be her someday. What is your favorite memory from this season? Winning states and Eastern states. What is your favorite quote from your favorite sports movie? “If you ain’t first, you’re last” — “Talladega Nights.” Worked hard and had to pull himself together to win with his father by his side. If you could have any fictional character as your teammate in your sport, who would it be? Captain America. He’s a natural leader and helped protect/lead the Avengers. Name: Sonia Munetz School: Phoenix (Liverpool) Class: Freshman What’s next for you? Offseason wrestling. Who inspires you? My family and coaches. If it weren’t for my dad to help me start off with Jiu-jitsu and then having my cousin Jacob and coaches help me transition into wrestling, I don’t think I would be able to do it alone. What is your favorite memory from this season? When I got third at states and I heard my family in the stands cheering me on, especially my mom and dad. What is your favorite quote from your favorite sports movie? From “Rocky,” when he said, “Remember, the mind is your best muscle. Big arms can move rocks, but big words can move mountains.” Because not only is wrestling physical but it’s also mental when you’re out on that mat, and my cousin sometimes says it’s a game of chess not checkers. If you could have any fictional character as your teammate in your sport, who would it be? I would say Godzilla, not just because my dad would probably say the same thing, but also because he’s the King of Monsters. Name: Brielle Nels School: Homer Class: Eighth grade What’s next for you? Next, I have the outdoor track season Who inspires you? April Parks is my inspiration because she trains incredibly hard in both wrestling and Jiu-jitsu. She keeps me focused and ready for competition. What is your favorite memory from this season? When I beat the number one seed at sectionals. What is your favorite quote from your favorite sports movie? “These aren’t spirit. These are spirit fingers!” This quote is from “Bring It On.” It reminds me to see the fun in wrestling rather than be so serious all the time. If you could have any fictional character as your teammate in your sport, who would it be? I would choose old-school Pink Panther because he’s very cool, calm and collected with his emotions, and thinks outside the box when solving problems. Name: Gracie Newman School: Homer Class: Senior What’s next for you? I will be playing lacrosse as my spring sport. I am currently undecided on where I will be attending college. I’m between wrestling for Ithaca College or going to Flagler College. Who inspires you? So many people have been a big inspiration for me this season. Of course, every one of my coaches, my parents and my teammates but most specifically Geoff Sorenson. He always gave me the confirmation that I needed to help me turn off those unhelpful doubts in my head. He always kept me working hard and made it enjoyable. I could not have had the wrestling career I have had without him in my corner. What is your favorite memory from this season? Probably placing 5th at states. It’s my favorite memory because of how supported I felt and how proud I made everyone. What is your favorite quote from your favorite sports movie? “I must break you” from the movie “Rocky lV.” This is my favorite quote because wrestling has taught me that it’s a mental game more than it is physical. If you could have any fictional character as your teammate in your sport, who would it be? I would want it to be the superhero, The Hulk. Our team is missing a heavyweight. Name: Brynn Shepardson School: Little Falls Class: Senior What’s next for you? I will be attending Lehigh University to study chemistry and wrestle at the D-I level. Who inspires you? My teammates. Getting to be in one of the hardest working rooms in the section and seeing the growth and success that comes out of it has motivated me to work as hard as I do and I’m very grateful for it. What is your favorite memory from this season? There’s a lot, but I will fondly remember finding out I was getting bumped up to be our 190/215 at our first boys dual tournament even though I weighed 170. I actually won a few matches, and it made me realize how far a little confidence and grit can go. What is your favorite quote from your favorite sports movie? “You can do it all night!” from “The Waterboy.” It pops in my head every now and then and it reminds me to stay confident in myself but not to take anything too seriously. Plus it’s fun to yell. If you could have any fictional character as your teammate in your sport, who would it be? I talked this over with my teammate, and he said Gimli from “The Lord of the Rings.” He keeps the vibes up, and that’s honestly all I need. Coach of the year Name: Tracy Norton School: Phoenix Years coaching: 22 Who inspires you to coach? The kids always wanting to learn and get better. What is your favorite sports memory from this season? Girls states. The first-ever freestyle-sanctioned states event. New York is the only state that does freestyle. If you could have any historical figure on your team, who would it be? Abraham Lincoln. His work ethic was unstoppable. Contact Lindsay Kramer anytime: Email | Twitter
