While most of the flag football conference tournaments will begin the Week of May 19, the Shore Conference requires first round games to be completed by May 13.
With playoff spots, tournament seeds and, in some cases, division titles on the line across the state, this week is — for some teams — a critical one.
The statewide list of undefeated teams with at least three victories has been pared to 16. It is headed by Kingsway, which won its state-best 10th game on Monday, 31-12, over Camden Catholic.
Mastery Camden, the No. 1-ranked team in New Jersey by NJ.com, is 9-0.
The most interesting game of the week will be played on Wednesday when No. 2-ranked Ridgewood (7-0), winner of 18-straight games dating back to last season, hosts No. 18 Paterson Kennedy (4-0-2) at 6:30 p.m.
Ridgewood has averaged 35 points per game over its last four starts and has allowed only 14 points.
The Maroons, the defending North Jersey state champions, have one of the state’s most balanced offenses. Ridgewood has 668 yards rushing and 644 passing. It has 14 rushing TDs and 13 scores through the air.
On defense, Ridgewood has 15 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and nine interceptions.
Meanwhile, Paterson Kennedy has not allowed a point in its last three games, blanking West Side (45-0), College Achieve Paterson (30-0) and Passaic Tech (0-0).
In other interesting games involving undefeated teams, Bayonne (6-0) faces a significant test Tuesday at St. Benedict’s, (6-2), 4:30.
No. 10 Bayonne, the Super Football Conference Independence Division champ, has out scored opponents 158-12. The Bayonne defense has recorded five-straight shutouts.
Bayonne’s senior QB Janaya Meyers needs 40 yards to reach 1,000 yards passing.
St. Benedict’s (6-2), out of the NJ.com Top 20 for the first time all spring, has lost two of its last three. It is coming off a 34-7 loss to Ridgewood.
St. Benedict’s has thrown for only 21 yards in its last three games.
Two other undefeated teams — one in the North and one in the South — will be tested this week.
In the SFC, head coach Brian O’Connor’s Mount Olive team is 5-0-2. It will face West Milford (5-1) on the road Wednesday, 6 p.m.
Mount Olive is 2-0-2 in its last four games with three shutouts. Mount Olive is the SFC Colonial Division champions while West Milford finished second in the Patriot Division, a game behind Wayne Valley.
Mount Olive’s Molly Smyth has run for 843 yards and 11 touchdowns.
West Milford as been a force defensively as well, allowing only 19 points all season. It has recorded consecutive shutouts.
The West Milford defense has put up 16 sacks, 23 tackles for loss and nine interceptions.
Junior Sara Wardlaw has been dominating with 13 sacks and seven tackles for loss. Senior Adison Arciniega has added four picks.
Finally, in South Jersey, Cedar Creek (6-1-1), playing as well as any team in New Jersey, looks to avenge a season-opening, 20-0, loss to Absegami on Wednesday, 4 p.m. in Egg Harbor City.
Cedar Creek is 6-0-1 in its last seven, including a 14-6 upset of Pleasantville last week.
Absegami has outpointed opponents 81-8 in its last three games.
