Meghan Markle criticised by disabled campaigner for 'mistake' at Invictus Games

Meghan Markle has been called out by a disability campaigner after being caught on camera moving an Invictus Games attendee's wheelchair. In a clip posted to her Instagram story, the Duchess of Sussex was seen meeting Team Canada competitors at the start of the Games in Vancouver and Whistler. As the group, including Prince Harry, moves in for a photo, Meghan can be seen moving a woman in a wheelchair into place for the snap. It's unclear if Meghan asked for permission before moving the wheelchair user into place. However, it has sparked a debate online, with disability campaigner Lucy Edwards taking to Instagram to talk about the clip. Showing a video of what happened, she asks: "Do you think Meghan Markle moved this lady mid-conversation without her permission? Let's talk about it." Lucy, who is blind, admits that at first glance cameras "don't capture everything" and says Meghan may well have talked to the lady about moving her wheelchair beforehand. But she adds that for the purposes of the video, she will assume this was not the case in order to make a point about moving mobility aids. She explains: "We are not taught about disability at all in our education systems or in our workplace so I can see how Meghan would have wanted to include this lady and bring her in on the fun not want to exclude her that's why she was doing this. "However, it does leave myself and many others within our community feeling quite shocked. You can see this woman is clearly in mid-conversation with someone and I've had first-hand experience of this myself when crossing the street with my guide dog Miss Molly." Lucy adds: "I'm just chatting casually to my husband, we're just walking along the road, we stop at a crossing because Miss Molly has told me that it's there and there is a random passer-by that wants to grab me because the road is clear and they're very well-meaning. "They want to help me but in that moment, it's really not helpful. All it does is make me feel confused, disorientated, interrupts the conversation between me and Ollie and I don't really understand why someone has to do it. "A mobility aid is our independence and our freedom and as soon as you touch our mobility aid, my long white cane, guide dog, a wheelchair, that is an extension of our disabled body. Please do not touch without permission." Lucy also captioned her Instagram video: "Did Meghan Markle mean to grab this lady‘s wheelchair without her permission? Whether she did or didn’t this has opened up a very important discussion about autonomy within the disabled community." The Mirror has contacted the Duchess of Sussex's office for comment. The campaigner's comments come as it was revealed Meghan will today leave Prince Harry at the Invictus Games in Canada in order to fly home to get back to their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilbet. The Duchess, 43, has spent five days at the multi-sport competition after arriving in Vancouver alongside Harry, 40, on Friday afternoon. Aides kept her travel plans under wraps for security reasons, but it is understood it had always been planned she would leave the event today. Harry is expected to stay at the Games until after the closing ceremony this Sunday. Meghan was with her husband for the first few days of the competition where they put on a loved-up display as they attended various events of the sporting tournament that champions injured servicemen and women.
