Metallica is one of the bestselling hard rock groups of all time. That statement is true when expanded to all genres, and not just the edgier end of the rock spectrum, as the superstars have moved more albums than most bands could ever dream of. The outfit’s selling prowess is back on full display this week as a classic from Metallica’s celebrated discography returns to one Billboard chart.
Metallica hasn’t released new music in nearly two years, but fans continue to buy the full-lengths that made the rockers chart toppers in the first place.
Metallica’s Ride the Lightning Returns
Ride the Lightning returns to the Top Album Sales chart this week. Luminate reports that in the past tracking frame, it sold 2,150 copies, which is enough to place it at No. 48 on the 50-spot ranking of the bestselling full-lengths in America.
That years-old set joins both the band’s self-titled affair and Master of Puppets on the same tally. Metallica, the project, dips from No. 32 to No. 36, while Master of Puppets declines outside of the top 40, falling from No. 38 to No. 43.
Metallica Matches Taylor Swift
Only a handful of artists managed to fill at least a trio of spaces on the Top Album Sales chart this week. As Ride the Lightning returns, the hard rockers match with both Tyler, the Creator and Taylor Swift for the second-most current placements on the tally.

Kendrick Lamar Beats Taylor Swift and Metallica
Only Kendrick Lamar manages to beat Metallica, Swift, and Tyler. This time around, the rapper is still enjoying the spoils of a sweep at the Grammys and his Super Bowl Halftime Show headlining performance. His latest full-length GNX keeps at No. 2, held back from running the show once more by Alter Ego by Lisa.
Lamar also sees his bestsellers Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Damn., and To Pimp a Butterfly find space on the Top Album Sales roster this frame. Those favorites all slide backward, settling at Nos. 14, 20, and 28, respectively.
Metallica’s Self-Titled Was Once a Bestseller
Only Metallica, among the band’s three popular present projects, has conquered the Top Album Sales chart in the past. Ride the Lightning peaked at No. 4, while Master of Puppets only soared to No. 7.
All three of them have spent triple-digit frames somewhere on Billboard’s purchase-centric roster, with Metallica standing out as the longest-running win. As of this period, it has now spent 733 weeks on the chart — more than twice as long as Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning combined.
