Micah Richards warns Liverpool over 'tough' Jeremie Frimpong transfer strategy

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer are in agreement that Liverpool need to bring in another right-back amid the increasing speculation around Jeremie Frimpong's transfer . The announcement last week by Trent Alexander-Arnold that he will be leaving his boyhood club as a free agent at the end of his contract this summer has created a gap in Arne Slot's starting eleven. With Conor Bradley, 21, seen as the natural choice to fill Alexander-Arnold's boots within the current squad. The Northern Ireland skipper, who signed for Liverpool in 2019 as a teenager, has made a significant impact in his 27 appearances this season, including a standout performance in the 2-0 Champions League victory over Real Madrid . However, despite Bradley's promise, Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing Bayer Leverkusen full-back Frimpong, who has impressed under Xabi Alonso's over the past two years. The Reds are reportedly nearing a deal for the 24-year-old Dutch international, with discussions progressing regarding activating his £29.5million release clause. The question of whether Liverpool should place their faith in Bradley as their primary right-back or invest in a new recruit like Frimpong was discussed on The Rest Is Football podcast this week. Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer concurred that Liverpool must bring in a new right-back to enhance their squad depth, emphasising the necessity for two proficient players per position. Meanwhile, Micah Richards pointed out the difference between recruiting a back-up player and signing a top talent like ex-Manchester City youngster Frimpong. Lineker initiated the conversation, stating: "You need two players that can play in that position. Everyone has pretty much two players in every position now so I guess they will have to make a signing. "It depends, I suppose, on whether they think they need a back-up right-back or do they not see anything in Conor Bradley. I think Bradley's really impressive." Shearer then added: "That doesn't surprise me, but it doesn't mean Bradley won't have a bright future because he will, I think. He's impressed me. But whether he's ready to go in full-time, maybe not. So that's why they'll get another one in. But you're right, they have to get another one in anyway." Bradley's season has been disrupted by a persistent hamstring injury, causing him to drop in and out of the first team and rarely complete a full match. With no current specialised alternative, Liverpool risk being left light at right-back should Bradley's injuries carry on into the following campaign. Richards, who faced tough competition from Pablo Zabaleta for the right-back slot at Man City, shared his thoughts: "It's a tough one because when another right-back comes in, it can help you by helping you raise your game, or it can hinder you because you can lose your confidence a little bit. "Another right-back would help, but if Frimpong comes in, he's No. 1, which could be difficult for Bradley to deal with. I think Bradley is very good. He's good going forward, he's intelligent with his runs, and he can do the one-on-one defending as well. "The only question mark is whether he could do it on a consistent basis. When he came into the team in place of Trent, the mindset of a sub is different to a starter."
