Michael Vaughan Offers Solution To Slow Over-Rate: 'These Lads Are Quite Rich'

Michael Vaughan feels that the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s monetary sanctions against slow over-rates in Test cricket are not enough. Je believes that instead the world body should make it mandatory to complete 90 overs on every day of a Test, no matter how long it takes, like it happens on the fifth day.
Vaughan was speaking after the second day of the India-England Test at Lord’s in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. India bowled 83 overs on the first day, while fewer than 75 overs were bowled on the second, leaving a combined lag of nearly 23 overs ahead of the third day.
ICC fines teams after the conclusion of the Test, and they can go up to about 50% of the players’ match fees to additional World Test Championship points deductions.
“I don’t think fines work,” Vaughan said on BBC Sport. “I think these lads (cricketers) are quite rich. I don’t think the cash is going to affect them. (It’s) been a problem for Test match cricket for a while. I know it’s hot. I know we’ve had a few injuries. But when we get to the fifth day, we have to bowl the 90 overs. I’ve no idea why on day one, two, three, and four we can see the game played at a snail’s pace,” he added.
He also feels that making bowling 90 overs mandatory will make the format more lively.
“Surely the game just moves on by saying ‘on day one there’s 90 overs. Guess what we’re going to do? We’re going to bowl 90 overs on day 2 exactly the same’… you watch on day 5 when the players, the umpires know that 90 overs have to be bowled, they’ll be running around, there won’t be as many drinks breaks, there won’t be as many delays because they know that 90 overs has to be bowled,” he added.
“So I’d make it very, very simple. You have to bowl the 90 overs. I would guarantee that would improve the pace (of the matches).”
Vaughan is not the first to call for a change like this. A few years ago, Joe Root had also said that authorities should allow Test cricket to be played till sunset (which happens quite late in the day). However, such a thing would be difficult to implement in the sub-continent where sun starts setting by 6pm.
