ANN ARBOR, Mich. — When the transfer portal opens later this week, Michigan football will be on the hunt for some help at punter.
The Wolverines are set to return senior Hudson Hollenbeck this fall, the backup to Tommy Doman last year, but there’s a desire inside the program to “create that competition,” special teams coordinator J.B. Brown said Monday.
Hollenbeck has been Michigan’s only dedicated punter this spring, handling a bulk of the duties as the staff weighs who to target next.
“I feel great with Hudson,” Brown said. “I think he’s matured a lot — especially from the game against Alabama, where he did have some good punts where we thought it could help us win a ballgame.”
Hollenbeck punted six times for 277 yards in the ReliaQuest Bowl victory, pinning the Crimson Tide inside their 20-yard line twice and booting two kicks 50-plus yards.
Still, Hollenbeck is relatively green as a punter, kicking in just one game since entering college in 2022. He’s appeared in a couple others as a placeholder, and Brown says Hollenbeck “feels like a starter.”
“We want to get six guys in the room — two at each spot (field goal, kickoff, punter) — so we’re looking for someone else to bring in to create that competition,” Brown said. “But he’s done a great job this spring so far. We truly trust him.”
Whoever wins the job this fall will take over for Tommy Doman, who entered the transfer portal in December after serving as Michigan’s punter and kickoff specialist in 2023 and 2024. Doman struggled with range at times last year, averaging just 42.6 yards per punt while pinning 15 of his 49 kicks inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Only 10 of them went for 50-plus yards.
If you’re wondering, tight end Marlin Klein, who has experience punting in high school, has been tagged as the team’s backup punter in practice this spring.
“Obviously we’re going to go look for another one to bring into the room this next cycle,” Brown said.
KICKER: Michigan is set at kicker, with Big Ten kicker of the year Dominic Zvada back for a second year with the Wolverines. Zvada was 26 of 27 on PATs and 21 of 22 on field-goal attempts last season, going a perfect 7 for 7 on field goals. Texas State transfer Beckham Sunderland, a former Major League Soccer goalkeeper and kickoff specialist, is expected to join the roster this summer.
RETURNERS: Semaj Morgan (punt) and Jordan Marshall (kickoff) are both set to return again this fall, Brown confirmed, with sophomore receiver I’Marion Stewart, sophomore running back Micah Ka’apana and freshmen Andrew Marsh expected to chip in.
“We’re trying to evaluate everybody who is a playmaker, to get the ball in their hands,” Brown said. “We’ve worked all the wide receivers, all the running backs, everybody back there.”
