Michigan QB Bryce Underwood surprises Belleville High security guard with new car

BELLEVILLE, Mich. — Mychal Darty thought he was showing up to work earlier this month to help one of the greatest high school quarterbacks he’s ever seen play with an interview. Instead, he was on the receiving end of a gift that he never saw coming — and all the attention. Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood surprised Darty, a security guard at his alma mater Belleville High School, with a brand-new 2025 Chevrolet Equinox SUV outside the football stadium, where the two originally met more than four years ago. “We were here at this field, there was a soccer game going on, and I came back from practice and I had nothing else to do with my life,” Underwood joked. “He was like, ‘hey, are you the quarterback?’ And before he ever got to know who I was or how I throw or see me as a person, he sat and had a conversation with me for like 30-45 minutes. That will always stick to the back of my head.” The vehicle, blue in color (of course!) and valued at approximately $35,000, was provided by Feldman Chevrolet of Highland as part of a name, image and likeness partnership with Underwood. Production folks from Michigan fan site Blue By Ninety were on hand, capturing footage for the video released Thursday. Years ago, an unveiling like this was prohibited under NCAA rules. But when a player of Underwood’s stature — a five-star prospect who inked a lucrative, multi-million dollar NIL deal with the Wolverines to attend Michigan — attracts the kind of attention that he does, it makes sense. And makes for a great story. Darty, 34, grew up in Belleville and has been a security guard at the school for more than seven years. He’s seen just about everything manning its grounds and worked his share of athletic events of the years, including having a front-row seat to Underwood’s rise to stardom — totaling nearly 13,000 all-purpose yards, winning back-to-back state titles and becoming the No. 1-ranked high school recruit in the country. He was also a two-time MLive high school football player of the year. “The best high school player I’ve ever seen, and we’ve had some pretty good ones come through here,” Darty said. “Definitely one who’s ready for anything. He’s a student of the game, he loves the sport, he loves the grind. He’s ready.” If you’re wondering, too, Darty was driving a 2013 Ford Edge before today. He said the reality that the new vehicle was his finally sank in as he sat in it with Underwood, who had tell him three or four times “that it was mine.” “I was coming to say nice things about him,” Darty said. “That’s what I thought. “This is a step up.”
