Michigan State reloaded its group of wide receivers in the offseason through the portal.
Austin Clay and Jaylan Brown are among the returners but looking elsewhere as the redshirt freshmen entered the portal on Tuesday. A program spokesman confirmed Clay’s portal entry while Brown made the announcement on social media.
Neither Clay nor Brown played as true freshmen last season. The Spartans wrapped up spring practice on Saturday.
The spring portal window opened last week and closes on Friday. Clay and Brown mark four Michigan State scholarship players to enter during the latest window, following defensive back Dillon Tatum and EDGE Anthony Jones. Defensive back Caleb Coley put his name in as a graduate transfer on April 1.
Clay, 6-foot-0 and 170 pounds, is a former three-recruit from Ohio who flipped from Bowling Green to sign with coach Jonathan Smith’s first recruiting class leading the Spartans. Brown, 6-1 and 192 pounds, was a three-star prospect from Texas who also signed with Michigan State’s 2024 class.
Nick Marsh returns as Michigan State’s top receiver and Smith added four veterans at the position through the portal in Omari Kelly (Middle Tennessee State), Chrishon McCray (Akron), Rodney Bullard (Valdosta State) and Evan Boyd (Central Michigan).
