Michigan tennis cruises in NCAA Tournament opener

ANN ARBOR — It was never in doubt. The Michigan women’s tennis team won its NCAA Tournament opener against Youngstown State on Friday on its home courts 4-0. The Wolverines, ranked third in the country, advanced to face No. 35 Arizona State on Saturday. The match officially ended when Piper Charney won a baseline rally after her opponent hit a backhand into the net. Michigan had already won the doubles point by winning all three matches — two ended at the same moment — and two other singles matches. Michigan was leading in the other three matches at the time. “A good start to the tournament,” Michigan coach Ronni Bernstein said. “I feel like we took care of business.” Fliegner, Michigan’s No. 1 singles player, won her match 6-1, 6-3 after pairing with Reese Miller to take their doubles match 6-2. “I played really well today,” said Fliegner, who improved to 30-6 in singles matches this season. “I felt like I was hitting the ball really clean, just taking time away really well. I handled the long points well, played the big points a little better.” Jessica Bernales was also a two-match winner on Friday: 6-4, 6-2 in singles and, with Lily Jones, 6-2 in a doubles match. Those two doubles matches ended simultaneously. Bayley Sheinin and Ava Bruno combined for a 6-0 win in their doubles match. Michigan needed only to split the six singles matches and had no trouble. After Bernales and Fliegner won, Charney closed her match to make it official — and was excited to be the one to do it. The No. 2 singles player improved to 34-9. At the time her match ended, Miller led hers 6-3, 5-0; Jones was up 6-1, 5-4; and Emily Sartz-Lunde led 7-5, 1-0. Michigan was coming off its first loss against a Big Ten team this season in Saturday’s Big Ten Tournament championship against Ohio State. “I think we’ve done a good job regrouping and refocusing on what’s to come,” Fliegner said. Youngstown State’s season ended with a 14-8 record. The Penguins brought an international lineup to the Varsity Tennis Center, with some of Friday’s competitors hailing from Portugal, Germany, Ukraine, Romania, Switzerland, and South Africa. Arizona State, which beat Ole Miss 4-1 earlier on Friday, figures to pose a bigger challenge. “I’m more excited for that match,” Fliegner said. “I think energy was a little bit low today because, I mean, it’s 4-0.” “We’re gonna have to lift our level tomorrow,” Bernstein said. “Today was pretty straightforward and I hope tomorrow is exactly like today, but I’m not expecting it to be.” She doesn’t have much familiarity with the Sun Devils as she avoided playing them when her good friend, Sheila McInerney, was the coach there. McInerney retired after last season. It’s a notable weekend for Bernstein, whose has a son graduating from Michigan State on Friday and a daughter graduating from Michigan on Saturday. Saturday’s match will be at the Varsity Tennis Center — outdoors unless the forecast changes — at 1 p.m., not 2 as originally announced.
