The Michigan women’s tennis team’s deepest NCAA Tournament run in program history ended on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines lost 4-1 to Texas A&M in the national semifinals. Texas A&M, ranked second in the country, will take on No. 1 Georgia in a rematch of last season’s national championship. The Aggies won it all last year.
Michigan, ranked third, was in the semis for the first time. The Wolverines lost the critical doubles point to start Saturday’s match, putting them in a tough spot. Lily Jones and Jessica Bernales won their match, on their sixth match point, 6-4. Jessica Fliegner and Reese Miller lost 4-6. In the final match to finish, Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde fell 5-7. They had been up 3-0 and 4-1 — and had a match point at 5-4 — but dropped the final three games.
As a result, Michigan needed to take four of the six singles matches. It didn’t happen.
Bernales lost. Sartz-Lunde won. Jones lost. All three matches were in straight sets. Michigan needed to sweep the remaining three matches. When Charney’s desperate backhand didn’t get over the net, Texas A&M clinched the victory.
At the time, Fliegner and Miller were both trailing in their third sets. Charney’s match also went three sets. Each of those Wolverines had won their first set before the Aggies came back.
The match was played at Baylor’s outdoor facility in Waco, Texas, where Michigan had ousted Oklahoma State on Thursday night.
Michigan finished the year 27-5.
