Mike Tindall Dreams of a Rugby Super Bowl

Even after hanging up his boots, ex-rugby player Mike Tindall has never really left the field. At 46, the former England center — world champion in 2003 and now a well-known figure in the Royal Family — is back in the spotlight with a project as ambitious as it is unexpected: the creation of R360, a brand-new international rugby league modeled on the Grand Prix. The aim? To attract the world's best players, without cutting them off from their international commitments. R360 promises to respect international windows, leaving players available to represent their countries. According to the BBC, the competition would be played mainly in the summer, from April to June and August to September, and while it would not conflict with the men's Six Nations Tournament, it would overlap with both the Southern Hemisphere Rugby Championship and the women's Six Nations Tournament. The tournament would take place in the world's largest cities: London, Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Cape Town have been mentioned as potential host cities. For Tindall, this league is the answer to a crisis in rugby's appeal, particularly among the younger generation and the general public. The stated aim: to finally give rugby its equivalent of the Super Bowl, with a world league that would be the “pinnacle of rugby.” The tournament is due to be launched next year and is committed to “unleashing the potential of women's rugby,” headlined by American superstar Ilona Maher. For the moment, few details have filtered out about funding or "institutional backing" for the project, although owners of teams in other sports, including the NFL and Formula 1, appear to be interested. But Tindall seems determined to shake things up and give rugby a stage worthy of its prestige, by redrawing its contours. Originally published in Vanity Fair France
