Mikel Arteta sent frank warning over Arsenal future despite Leicester victory

Arsenal have been told they "need to win things", with manager Mikel Arteta now in his sixth season in charge of the club.
Arteta has transformed Arsenal into genuine Premier League title contenders, but they have finished second behind Manchester City for the past two seasons and the only major trophy they have won under the Spaniard was the 2020 FA Cup after he replaced Unai Emery during the campaign.
Arsenal currently sit second in the league again this season, four points behind Liverpool who do have a game in hand. However, their title challenge has been severely hampered by serious injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus which have left them without a frontline striker.
Arsenal were able to pick up a 2-0 win over Leicester thanks to a late brace from midfielder Mikel Merino, who was used as a makeshift striker by Arteta, and former Chelsea star Joe Cole believes they must now start winning silverware.
"The disappointing thing is they thought they had put themselves in a position where if Man City were to come off the gas, which they have, they would be the ones to capitalise," Cole said on TNT Sports.
"Particularly with Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool. That will be disappointing to them, but I don't think you can be disappointed with what's happened at Arsenal over the last five years. They were in the doldrums for many, many years.
"This group of players has put them back on the map and made them serious contenders, but they do need to start winning silverware. That's what it's all about at a club like Arsenal, you need to win things. That's the next challenge for this group of players."
Despite the fact Arsenal do not have a recognised striker, Arteta was delighted with his side's win over Leicester as it saw them put pressure on Liverpool after they dropped points by drawing against rivals Everton on Wednesday.
"Yes, and it was [important] for us as well," Arteta told reporters in his post-match press conference. "Everything that happened in the last few days, it was a lot of noise to show how much we want it, because regardless of what happens, we’re going to really go for it, that we believe for the resources that we have and the quality of our players and still adapt and be competitive and still win a lot of football matches."
