Mikel Arteta's first major summer transfer target emerges as Arsenal plan talks
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is eyeing up a summer swoop for Leroy Sane , it has been claimed. The pair worked together at Manchester City when Arteta was assistant manager, and a reunion could be on the cards. Sane left City for Bayern Munich in 2020 and has played more than 200 times for the Bundesliga leaders. However, the Germany international is out of contract at the end of the season and would be available on a free transfer. Arsenal could well have a vacancy in the wide forward positions at the end of the current campaign. Raheem Sterling has struggled to make an impact since joining on loan from Chelsea , and is not considered likely to join permanently once that deal comes to an end. At 29 years of age, Sane has an older age profile than much of the Gunners squad. The club are set to lose one of their more experienced players, though, with Jorginho expected to join Flamengo at the end of June if not sooner . According to The Sun , Arsenal have been put on alert by the news that there has been no progress over new contract talks between Sane and Bayern. BILD earlier indicated there have been no negotiations over extending the deal he signed when he joined Bayern in the summer of 2020. Sane isn't the only attacking prospect to be linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium. Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko remains an option despite a move failing to materialise last summer, though talk over a deal for Lille's Jonathan David has cooled amid comments from the Canadian about his love for La Liga. "I wouldn't say [ La Liga ] would be my preferred league, but it's a league I enjoyed watching more so [than others]," David told the I't's Called Soccer! Podcast . "One day, I would like to play there. But will that happen? I don't know. I'm not opposed to anything. We'll see where the future takes us." Arsenal have been light in attack since January, with an injury crisis derailing their title bid. Gabriel Martinelli recently returned, while Bukayo Saka could be back in time to face Real Madrid in the Champions League in April, but Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are out for the remainder of the season. Arteta's team have needed to find goals from elsewhere, and two of their stars contributed in England's win over Albania on Friday night. Myles Lewis-Skelly scored on his senior international debut, while Gunners midfielder Declan Rice laid on the second goal of the evening for Harry Kane . "I am lost for words," Lewis-Skelly told BBC Radio 5 Live after his dream debut. "This past six months have gone so quickly. I stay in the present and I take every moment as it comes."
