Mikel Arteta was left stunned as Declan Rice scored two spectacular free-kicks to help Arsenal thrash Real Madrid 3-0. The Gunners welcomed Los Blancos on Tuesday night for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Both teams had plenty of opportunities, but the match remained goalless until the 58th minute. That's when Rice stepped up to deliver a stunning free-kick, curving his shot around the Madrid wall and into the net to give Arsenal the lead. He then stepped up again with just 20 minutes remaining and somehow managed to outdo his first effort. This time, he struck the ball across the wall, firing it into the opposite top corner, leaving Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois diving in vain. Rice celebrated by leaping onto the advertising hoardings to bask in the crowd's adoration. The Amazon Prime cameras then replayed Arteta's reaction on the sideline. The Gunners boss initially raised his fists in celebration before turning around and holding his arms around his head in disbelief. Arteta was then embraced by his backroom staff as they joined in the celebrations, reports the Mirror. Captain Martin Odegaard and Jurien Timber could also be seen with their hands on their heads in the aftermath of the goal. Mikel Merino quickly added a third goal for Arsenal, helping them take a firm grip on the quarter-final clash. Declan Rice's stellar performance was curtailed by injury 10 minutes from time, leading to Kieran Tierney stepping in his place. The England star received plaudits for his match-winning display, with Newcastle icon Alan Shearer praising him enthusiastically on Amazon Prime. "You thought the first one was impressive? Goodness me. The accuracy, the power, the bend and the control on it. Thibaut Courtois left a big gap because he thought he was going to go over the wall. It just sensational. Courtois is nowhere near it," praised Shearer. "It is absolutely incredible. If you take away Declan Rice's two goals his performance back to front has been so impressive - his tackling, his driving forward with the ball. "What a position Arsenal have put themselves in now. They have been so, so impressive in this second half. They have done everything right. They have been sensational and they deserve to be in this position." Defensive legend and ex-England star Matt Upson shared his amazement at Rice's heroics, emphasizing the shock surrounding his initial goal marking the first direct free-kick scored in his career while speaking to BBC Sport. "Unbelievable. I don't think anyone expected that to happen. Why not? Because the first one was an absolute screamer and you think he can't beat that," Upson marvelled. "This free kick is absolutely superb. It has bend. It has power. Question marks over the wall from Real Madrid, but it is such a lovely free kick hit right into the postage stamp. What a brilliant double free kick special from Declan Rice."
